An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the greens team here at Thornton golf club, as an apprentice Greenkeeper. Thornton golf club was established in 1921 and is an 18 hole parkland golf course located in Thornton, Fife. This apprenticeship will run for 2 years. At the end of Year 2 you will be a fully qualified greenkeeper with tickets to spray chemicals and operate chainsaws. The successful applicant will report directly to the course manager.
They will have a strong work ethic, a keen eye for detail and be able to work both on their own and as part of a team. The post requires someone with good communication skills and who does not mind an early start to their working day.
Ideal requirements:- Have an interest in golf or greenkeeping activities.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Interest in hard landscaping practices / machinery maintenance.
- Live in the area or ability to commute for early morning starts.
- Driver licence (preferred but not essential).
This position will see you attend online learning at Elmwood college over a 2 year period fully paid by the club. Alongside this, you will be supported by the club in gaining appropriate tickets for your job such as your PA1/PA2/PA6 spraying certificates & chainsaw operation tickets. All PPE and staff uniform will be provided by the club.
Responsibilities for this role:- Perform general greenkeeping duties to maintain the appearance and playability of Thornton golf club, including grass cutting, strimming, bunker raking, changing holes etc.
- Utilise hand tools and power tools to complete various tasks as instructed.
- Apply fertilisers, treatments and dressings as well as aeration works on greens, tees and approaches.
- Support the team to build and maintain landscape features such as bunker renovations, pathways and tees.
- Use irrigation systems to water greens, tees and approaches in the hotter months, including fixing any issues with irrigation systems.
- Operate and maintain heavy machinery used in the greenkeeping activities.
- Work a 1-4 weekend system.
