We are seeking a dependable and collaborative Platform Engineer to join our engineering team and help design, build and maintain the foundational platform services that support our product delivery. This role is ideal for someone with strong systems engineering or site reliability experience who enjoys automating infrastructure, improving operational resilience, and enabling development teams through robust tooling and self-service capabilities.

The successful candidate will work across cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and security automation to ensure scalable, secure and cost-effective platform solutions. You will partner closely with application teams, DevOps colleagues and security to deliver platform improvements, incident response, and platform-as-a-service components that accelerate delivery and reduce toil.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement and operate cloud infrastructure and platform services (IaaS/PaaS) with a focus on reliability and scalability.
  • Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and developer self-service workflows.
  • Automate provisioning, configuration and deployment using Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Implement and operate monitoring, logging and alerting solutions to ensure observability and rapid incident response.
  • Work with security and compliance teams to embed security controls and ensure platform compliance.
  • Investigate and resolve platform incidents, perform root cause analysis and implement preventative measures.
  • Optimise platform cost, performance and capacity planning.
  • Develop reusable platform components, templates and libraries to accelerate application teams.
  • Provide on-call support as part of a rota and contribute to continuous improvement of runbooks and run-time practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define platform roadmaps, deliverables and adoption plans.
Skills & Experience
  • Experience operating production cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP) in a hands-on engineering role.
  • Strong automation skills using IaC tools (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation) and configuration management (e.g. Ansible).
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
  • Good working knowledge of containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with observability tools and practices (metrics, tracing, logging).
  • Strong scripting skills (e.g. Python, Bash, Go) and experience with version control (Git).
  • Understanding of security best practices for cloud and platform services.
  • Experience with incident management, post-incident reviews and capacity planning.
  • Relevant professional experience in a platform, SRE or DevOps position; certifications such as AWS/GCP/Azure are desirable but not essential.
  • Previous experience within a Defence environment preferred.
Personal Attributes
  • Analytical and pragmatic approach to problem solving.
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on operational excellence.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborative team player with a service-minded attitude.
  • Proactive, curious and committed to continuous learning.
  • Comfortable taking ownership and working independently when required.
Benefits
  • 25 days Annual Leave (plus Bank Holidays).
  • Flexible and hybrid working options.
  • On-site Parking.
  • Group Life Insurance.
  • Health and Dental Cashback Plans.
  • Wellbeing Services (includes GP, Physio and Savings Benefits).
  • Supported training, professional development and certification contributions.
  • Employee Referral Scheme.
  • Electric Vehicle Salary Sacrifice Scheme.
