Thorn Baker are recruiting for a Sports Groundsman to join a local council’s Green Spaces team based in Ilkeston. This role is ideal for someone with experience in fine turf maintenance and sports pitch preparation, who takes pride in delivering high-quality playing surfaces.
Hours:
- Monday to Thursday: 07:30 – 16:00
- Friday: 07:30 – 12:30
Pay:
- Weeks 0–12: £12.71 per hour
- Weeks 13–52: £13.26 per hour
- Weeks 52+: £13.47 per hour
Duties include:
- Maintaining fine turf areas including cricket, bowls, croquet, and golf surfaces
- Marking out sports pitches (football, rugby, cricket, baseball)
- Operating pedestrian and ride-on mowers (rotary and cylinder)
- Carrying out routine grounds maintenance to a high standard
- Ensuring playing surfaces are safe, presentable, and match-ready
What we’re looking for:
- Experience in fine turf or sports ground maintenance
- Knowledge of pitch marking for multiple sports
- PA1/PA6 certification (preferred)
- Competence with pedestrian and ride-on mowers (rotary and cylinder)
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all conditions
- Reliable, detail-focused, and able to work as part of a team
