As a Street Markets Officer in a newly-created team, you can make your own powerful contribution by ensuring the full benefits of our exceptional local markets are realised by our communities, local businesses and the traders.
We are embarking on a transformation programme which will impact Church Street Market, Maida Hill Market, Rupert Street Market and Berwick Street Market. With the full guidance of a Team Leader, you will therefore play an instrumental role in steering two of these markets in a clear direction, seeing to it that that through excellent management and support, your markets can become even more prosperous and beneficial to our residents and traders.
It is imperative that the markets are running effectively, safely and in compliance with legislation and licenses, so you will visit your markets every day, ensuring their smooth operation. Working collaboratively with colleagues across the council to successfully manage all aspects of your designated markets, you will maintain oversight of the daily set-up and takedown of stalls and equipment, identifying any potential hazards and noting these in a risk register, and putting the relevant measures in place to ensure everyone’s wellbeing and safety.
Regardless of the weather, you will be a daily presence amongst the traders, conducting audits and assessing health and safety standards, and you will build relationships with everyone who works in and uses the markets, so that the full benefits of market-life are being embraced.
For the last few years, the markets have remained relatively unchanged, with little council intervention other than when enforcements were taken against the traders or when problems have occurred. . This is an exciting opportunity to become a trusted face within the markets, working directly with traders to help them embrace our transformation program, and get on board with bold new initiatives.
To make the most of this opportunity, you will therefore have a background of working in markets, retail environments, public spaces or events. With some experience of monitoring and enforcing compliance standards, you will have the confidence to manage issues on your own, and you will know when to escalate things to your Team Leader.
If enforcement requirements are needed you will report these to the relevant teams, though through clever intervention, you’ll aim to get the relevant parties on-board with your ideas – so good communication skills are absolutely vital! Crucially you will enjoy working outdoors, and you’ll have the flexibility to work varying hours, including at weekends. With a sharp eye for detail and good record-keeping skills, you’ll have the physical capacity to help lift and assemble equipment during market set-up and takedown.
