Role Description This full-time, on-site HGV Mechanical Technician role is based in Billingham. The technician will carry out routine servicing, diagnostics, and mechanical repairs on HGVs and related equipment, ensuring vehicles are safe, compliant, and ready for service. Daily responsibilities include inspecting vehicles, identifying mechanical and electrical faults, performing scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and completing repair documentation accurately. The role also involves working with service advisors and parts teams, following manufacturer guidelines, and supporting the smooth operation of the workshop. The technician is expected to maintain a clean, safe working environment and uphold Thompsons’ standards of customer service and workmanship.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess strong skills in equipment maintenance and general maintenance of HGVs and associated systems.
  • Candidates should possess skills in preventive maintenance, including routine inspections and scheduled servicing to minimize downtime.
  • Candidates should possess skills in troubleshooting and fault diagnosis for mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical systems.
  • Candidates should possess skills in maintenance and repair, including component replacement, adjustments, and system testing.
  • Recognized HGV or motor vehicle maintenance qualification (e.g., NVQ/City & Guilds Level 3 or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Experience working in a commercial vehicle workshop or dealer environment is beneficial.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, use diagnostic equipment, and follow safety and compliance procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Full, valid UK driving licence; HGV licence is an advantage.
