Stand with working people. For over a century, Thompsons has been a force for social justice — using the law to defend and advance workers’ rights alongside the trade union movement. Our Purpose is clear: to be a collective force for social justice, based upon legal expertise, innovation and values. We act only for claimants. Never for employers. Never for insurers. That’s not just a stance — it’s our identity, forged through landmark cases with trade unions and their members across every sector.

As a Senior Solicitor in our Employment Rights team, you’ll help shape outcomes that change working lives. From complex discrimination and whistleblowing claims to collective rights and test litigation, you’ll run and lead high‑impact cases and contribute to the development of strategy in matters that set direction for our clients and the movement. You’ll also have opportunities to work closely with experienced partners and colleagues, and contribute to the mentoring and supervision of junior lawyers in the team. We operate a team‑based working model in Employment Rights so lawyers at every level gain exposure to the most complex matters, with clear lines of support and progression.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage and lead a varied caseload of complex Employment Tribunal and (where appropriate) Employment Appeal Tribunal matters, exercising sound judgment on key tactical decisions.
  • Contribute to collective case strategy (case management hearings).
  • Work closely with trade unions — building relationships with officials regionally and nationally.
  • Support, supervise and develop junior colleagues.

What you’ll bring:

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEx with significant employment litigation experience.
  • A deep grasp of ET procedure and a track record of handling complex or high‑value complex cases from start to finish end‑to‑end.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills, with clear client communication.
  • Commitment to social justice and a desire to stand up for workers and their unions.

You’ll join a firm with a proven union‑side legacy, including landmark wins such as holding UK construction companies to account for unlawful blacklisting of workers fighting for health and safety at work — a case that secured justice for hundreds.

The package:

  • Competitive contributory pension (up to 11% employer contribution)
  • £4,500 car allowance
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus additional Christmas closure
  • Permanent Health Insurance, healthcare cash plan, life assurance, and more

Thompsons is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and actively encourage candidates from Law Centres, advice agencies, the third sector and other organisations who share our values.
