Hours of work: 37.5 per week, 8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday with occasional cover required outside these hours depending on business needs.

About Us: Founded in 1926, Thompsons of York produce and supply the highest quality animal feeds to British farmers. Our feed mill consumes over 140,000 tonnes of raw materials every year, requiring careful planning of deliveries and collections to keep the business well supplied. We deal with many major commodity trading businesses to procure the highest quality raw materials at the best prices.
Job Purpose: The Procurement Officer is a critical part of the Procurement team with a commercial slant, having an immediate focus on raw material planning strategy and supporting wider procurement activities in a development role, working within established commercial frameworks. This is an entry level role designed to give the successful candidate immersion in a fast-paced procurement team for a leading manufacturing business. This role is created with a graduate in mind but equally would suit any early career professional, giving immediate responsibility, accountability and space to make an impact from day one.
Job Tasks:
- Develop tools to aid raw material planning, estimating usages and opening/closing stocks to aid purchasing decisions.
- Support the raw material planner in optimising inbound haulage, planning deliveries for the most efficient points to minimise reliance on 3rd party operators.
- Calculate monthly buying requirements using forecasted data.
- Collate pricing information to provide a comprehensive overview of market position. Update cost sets regularly to reflect latest market position and develop systems to ensure logical pricing.
- Provide timely raw material quotations to Commercial team based on latest available market information.
- Contribute to market insight discussions, carrying out own analysis and debating opinions with wider team.
- Input purchase contract data to ERP systems.
- Ensure contracts are sent to suppliers in a timely manner. Receive contracts from suppliers and ensure they are correctly stored and acknowledged.
- Handle invoice and weight queries, investigating and resolving issues as they arise.
- Support the transition from outdated process to modern, digital workflow.
- Act as cover for Raw Material Planner and Procurement Manager where needed.
Qualifications and Experience:
- 2:1 Undergraduate Degree or studying towards one. There is no specific subject requirement, though focus in numerate topics, Economics or Supply Chain would be well suited.
- Experience is not essential but backgrounds in sales, trading, procurement, logistics or market insight would all be an advantage, as would familiarity with agricultural commodities.
