A Machinist (Grade 1) at Thompson Aero Seating is a skilled operator with an extensive knowledge of CNC machining processes and programming. They will be integral for shop floor problem solving and improvements while also conducting program prove outs in line with the Final Article Inspection (FAI) process. A keen eye for detail and great mechanical aptitude are essential. Responsible for operating a number of CNC Machines to their maximum ability with a focus on creativity, ensuring that all products are produced to the required specifications with a focus on world class quality standards, ensuring that targets are consistently met and exceeded. This role is continental night shift (19:30-07:30) in the Machine Shop. Shift rota will be discussed at interview stage.
Responsibilities
- Operate several CNC Machines to produce high quality components, ensuring that production deadlines are met, efficiently, safely and to appropriate quality standards.
- Be completely accountable for world class quality.
- Take ownership of problem solving to maximise machine capabilities and eliminate waste during machining with a key focus on continuous improvement.
- Drive costs out of parts through implementing efficiency and improvement measures.
- Liaise with the Technical Lead to discuss improvements to add value to the machining process consistently raising the bar on standards and leading by example.
- Work closely with engineering, supply chain and quality colleagues to constantly raise the bar on process improvement, cost reduction and standards.
- Check and maintain machinery daily to ensure functionality and liaise with the Technical Lead with any machine issues that affect quality and production.
- Understand specifications of the task at hand using engineering drawings.
- Inspect and measure finished products and determine if the process has been completed properly, engaging with internal stakeholders to ensure exceptional standards are maintained.
- Liaise with Lead/Manager to ensure high standards of work and on time delivery in accordance with the business needs.
- Ensure Health & Safety and housekeeping standards are adhered to.
- Take ownership of issues and escalate to management as required.
- Maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and storage areas to ensure compliance with quality and safety regulations.
- Maintain a safe, organised, and efficient work area.

- Essential 2+ years' experience of both 3 and 5 Axis Machines and full competency with ability to train colleagues (Essential for Grade 1 Machinist).
