The Department
An exciting opportunity has become available to join our large, dedicated and passionate PE Department. You will be joining a supportive and hardworking department who utilise teamwork to provide students with fantastic opportunities whilst striving for positive outcomes. There are currently 11 teachers of PE within the thriving department. The team are committed to delivering the highest standard of education and are enthusiastic and passionate about their subject areas. Every team member has their own key role to play to ensure the development, progression and success of the department. Within the team we have a mix of teaching experience, with some current ECTs and other staff members who have been teaching for multiple years. We also have staff with other whole school responsibilities including Heads of Year, Assistant Heads of Year and an Assistant SENDCO.
We are exceptionally fortunate to have some fantastic sporting facilities at Sandwell Academy. These facilities offer staff and students the best possible opportunities and experience within Physical Education. We have full access to a newly refurbished, state of the art, fitness suite, 3G Astro turf football pitch, two grass football pitches, cricket square, indoor sports hall and an athletics track.
At Key Stage 3 all students follow the National Curriculum with students receiving two lessons of PE per week. Students participate in fourteen different sports and activities across the academic year. This process allows students to develop and refine skills across a large variety of sporting activities. At Key Stage 4, students can opt to study the GCSE PE or BTEC Sport qualification. For core PE, students have an input into the sporting activities they engage in throughout the year. Each class will select a pathway of seven different sports and activities and these will be completed throughout the academic year. At Key Stage 5, students can opt to study AQA A-level PE or BTEC Sport. The department also runs 6th form sport on Wednesday afternoons. This sees us enter two football, one basketball and one netball team into the college league. 6th form students are also able to access the Fitness Suite.
Extra-curricular PE is a huge part of our offer to students at Sandwell Academy. We run a large after school programme throughout the year and we attend multiple fixtures on a weekly basis. We are keen to give students a range of experiences outside of the classroom and run multiple trips each year. Our biggest trips are our Ski Trip and Sports Tour, which take place on alternating years.
