Paisley Full-Time On-site

Thomas Stewart Builders Ltd are looking for an experienced and reliable Multi-Trade Operative to join our growing team.

Due to continued growth and an increasing workload, we're looking for a skilled, versatile and hardworking individual who has experience across a range of building trades, takes pride in their workmanship and is comfortable carrying out a variety of repair, maintenance and refurbishment works.

You'll be joining an established multi-trade contractor, working across domestic and commercial properties throughout West Central Scotland.

We're particularly interested in someone who has a strong background in at least one core trade, with the skills, experience and willingness to undertake work across other trades when required.

The Role

As a Multi-Trade Operative, you'll be responsible for carrying out a varied range of building repairs, property maintenance and refurbishment works across our contracts and projects.

The nature of our work means that no two days are necessarily the same. You could be carrying out repairs at a domestic property one day, undertaking refurbishment works the next, or working alongside other members of our team on a larger project.

We're looking for someone who can work confidently and independently within their areas of expertise, while also being adaptable and willing to assist with other trades and general building works when required.

Typical work may include:

  • Joinery: General joinery repairs, fitting and repairing doors, skirtings, architraves, flooring, kitchens and other fixtures and fittings.
  • Roofing: Minor roof repairs, replacing damaged tiles and slates, guttering, fascia and soffit repairs, and general roof maintenance.
  • Plastering: Patch plastering, repairing damaged walls and ceilings, preparing surfaces and making good following repairs.
  • Roughcasting and Rendering: Minor roughcast and render repairs, patching damaged areas and carrying out general external maintenance.
  • Painting and Decorating: Interior and exterior painting, surface preparation, filling, sanding and applying decorative finishes.
  • General Building Repairs: Minor masonry repairs, pointing, stone repairs and other general building maintenance tasks.
  • Property Maintenance: Identifying and resolving general maintenance issues across domestic and commercial properties.
  • Refurbishment Works: Assisting with kitchen and bathroom refurbishments, property upgrades and general improvement works.
  • Making Good: Completing associated repairs and finishing works following maintenance, installations or other building works.
  • General Site Duties: Preparing work areas, organising materials, maintaining a clean and safe working environment and ensuring properties are left tidy following completion.

You won't necessarily be expected to be fully qualified or experienced in every trade listed above. However, you should have a strong foundation in at least one core trade, together with practical experience and the confidence to undertake a variety of other building and maintenance tasks within your capabilities.

Working as Part of a Multi-Trade Team

Thomas Stewart Builders is a multi-trade contractor, and our approach is built around our trades working together to deliver a complete service to our customers and clients.

While you'll have your own areas of expertise, you'll also be expected to assist other members of our team with general building, repair, maintenance and refurbishment works where reasonable, appropriate and within your capabilities.

This could involve working independently on smaller maintenance jobs, assisting another tradesperson on a larger project, carrying out associated repairs or completing the finishing touches required to get a property ready for handover.

We believe that having a team of versatile, skilled operatives who are willing to support one another helps us deliver work efficiently, maintain high standards and provide a better service to our customers.

We're particularly interested in people who have a flexible, practical approach to their work and are willing to get involved, rather than taking the view that something is simply "not my trade."

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced Multi-Trade Operative with a good all-round understanding of building repairs, property maintenance and refurbishment works.

Ideally, you'll have a strong background in one or more of our core trades, alongside practical experience in other areas of construction and maintenance.

We're particularly looking for someone who:

  • Has proven experience in at least one core building trade, such as joinery, roofing, roughcasting, plastering or painting and decorating.
  • Has practical experience carrying out a variety of general building repairs and property maintenance tasks.
  • Is confident working independently and can complete jobs to a high standard without constant supervision.
  • Can assess maintenance issues, identify appropriate solutions and carry out the necessary repairs within their capabilities.
  • Has a good understanding of building materials, tools and construction methods.
  • Produces consistently good-quality work and takes pride in the finished result.
  • Has a good eye for detail, particularly when carrying out repairs, making good and finishing works.
  • Is flexible and comfortable undertaking work across different trades.
  • Is willing to assist other members of the team when required.
  • Can manage their workload effectively and organise the materials and tools required for each job.
  • Is reliable, punctual and professional.
  • Can communicate effectively with customers, clients, colleagues and management.
  • Understands the importance of maintaining a clean, tidy and safe working environment.
  • Has a good understanding of health and safety requirements within the construction industry.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.

Experience working within reactive maintenance, planned maintenance, insurance repairs, social housing or property refurbishment would be advantageous.

Relevant trade qualifications and a valid CSCS card would also be beneficial.

Above all, we're looking for someone who is dependable, adaptable, takes pride in their workmanship and has the practical skills and attitude to become a valued member of our multi-trade team.
