Overall Objective of the Role
The Managers are responsible to the Hellenic Executive Board and Member's Committee "Memco" for provision of claims and loss prevention advice both to the Board/ Memco itself and to the wider membership.
The Claims and Loss Prevention Team advise the Board/ Memco on claims and loss prevention matters, manages claims brought by Members under their insurance cover with the Association and shares loss prevention information and advice with the Membership.
The role is to assist the Claims and Loss Prevention Director and, in their absence, assume responsibility for the Claims and Loss Prevention functions including supervision of any Claims Executives.
Responsibilities
- Claims
- Management and supervision of War claims and casualty response.
- Be available to deal with urgent claims out of working hours.
- Stakeholder management during and after the claim including crew, ship owners, Directors, external advisors, brokers and reinsurers.
- Supplier management including benchmarking and cost control (legal, crisis response consultants, extraction and repatriation consultants and intelligence providers).
- Prepare agenda items on claims for board meetings and advisory committees.
- Assist with advice to Memco and/or advisory committees on the exercising of discretion on claims.
- Provide advice to Members on claims.
- Liaise with reinsurance brokers on claims recoveries.
- Maintaining accurate and timely claims records in core systems.
- Loss Prevention
- Assist in the organising annual loss prevention seminar for Members, target fleets and brokers.
- Provide advice to Members on loss prevention matters.
- Liaise with third party intelligence providers.
- Marketing
- Develop, maintain and manage client relationships with Members including travel (mainly Greece) for Member visits.
- General
- Understand the Associations' reinsurance arrangements, contracts and commercial sensitivities.
- Remain up to date with market trends.
- Ensure familiarity with war risks market and the advantages of and threats to the Associations.
Person specification
- Minimum of 5 years' War or other classes of marine claims experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Able to manage a variety of stakeholders
- Excellent team working skills
- Able to work to tight deadlines and targets whilst maintaining high levels of accuracy and attention to detail
- Able to take a commercial approach to problem solving
- Able to manage and take responsibility for own workload, seeking assistance where required.
• Detailed knowledge of
- Shipping law, insurance law and good general shipping knowledge.
- The Rules of the Association, including optional additional covers such as War Loss of Hire and Contraband Loss of Hire
- Interaction between war risks insurance and other areas of marine insurance including P&I, Hull & Machinery, FD&D.
- Cargo and charter party claims and their interaction with war claims.
- Geopolitical trends and influence on risk
- Loss prevention practice e. g. maritime kidnap for ransom

Working Arrangements: Monday to Friday, 09:30 – 17:30, based in London Head Office (flexible, 3 days office based).
