Real Estate Supervising Lawyer, 7+ Years' PQE
Location:Leeds, Yorkshire | Contract: Permanent | Hours: Full-time or part-time | Salary: Competitive

Purpose of the Role

Our client, a leading national law firm, is seeking a Supervising Lawyer to support its growing Real Estate practice in Yorkshire. The role focuses on supervising and developing junior lawyers rather than managing a personal caseload.

The successful candidate will provide ad hoc supervision across live matters to improve the quality and consistency of work. They will help the partners manage the training and development of junior lawyers and supervise complex, client-facing work within the firm's high-end transactional real estate offering.

The Team

The Real Estate Group is one of the firm's largest practices. Within it, the regional transactional team is substantial and growing, and forms a key part of the firm's national real estate offering.

The team advises on high-value investment, development, landlord and tenant, and portfolio transactions for a broad range of clients, including leading investors, developers, occupiers, funders, corporates and public sector bodies. It is recognised for combining technical excellence with a commercial, business-focused approach.

The team has built a high-performing yet collegiate culture, giving junior lawyers early responsibility within a supportive environment. A key differentiator is its commitment to structured supervision, training and knowledge management, reflected in this dedicated role.

The Supervising Lawyer's primary clients will be the real estate lawyers they support and develop, and, by extension, the external clients those lawyers advise.

What the Role Involves

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide supervision, teaching and coaching to junior lawyers (particularly those at 0–3 PQE) across landlord and tenant, property management, sales and purchases, development and client account work, reviewing drafts, giving feedback and helping build their legal judgement, commercial awareness and confidence.
  • Support the delivery of high-quality legal work by providing targeted supervision across live matters, helping junior lawyers prioritise workloads, manage deadlines and understand their role within the wider transaction, and giving constructive feedback, all without carrying a personal caseload.
  • Support training and knowledge development by identifying common themes from supervision and feeding them back to Senior/Principal Supervising Lawyers, assisting with the preparation and delivery of local office training, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous improvement, and supporting Knowledge Lawyer initiatives.
  • Undertake supplemental fee-earning work, where agreed on a case-by-case basis, including preparing title and lease reports, conducting legal research, completing discrete project-based tasks, responding to peer queries and carrying out peer reviews.
  • Help junior lawyers navigate an increasingly AI-enabled legal services landscape, balancing the integrity of legal advice with the productivity benefits of AI. An in-depth understanding of AI is not required, but a willingness to learn about its application and an open mind about its benefits and challenges are welcome.

Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate will be:

  • An experienced real estate lawyer, ideally with a minimum of seven years' current PQE gained in private practice or in-house, with strong experience in investment acquisitions and disposals, landlord and tenant matters, asset and estate management, and development work, together with a solid understanding of current market practice and commercially acceptable negotiating positions.
  • Technically strong with excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal issues clearly and turn technical law into practical, commercial guidance.
  • Passionate about developing others, with experience of supervision, coaching and constructive feedback, and the confidence to work with stakeholders from trainees to partners.
  • Committed to helping lawyers build the skills to deliver practical client solutions, manage competing priorities, draft high-quality legal documents and perform confidently under pressure.
  • Inquisitive, enthusiastic and committed to continuous learning, with a genuine interest in understanding clients' objectives and fostering a culture of quality, innovation and collaboration.

Flexibility

While it is envisaged as a full-time position, with the same time and commitment demands as any other transactional real estate lawyer role, applications are also welcome from candidates seeking part-time arrangements, or arrangements with greater certainty around working hours, with appropriate adjustment to salary expectations. The firm is committed to supporting flexible working where possible and is happy to discuss how the role could be shaped to meet both business needs and the successful candidate's preferences.
