Are you passionate about helping young people with SEND build confidence, develop independence and achieve their potential? Think FE is recruiting a Learning Mentor for a forward-thinking further education college in Warwickshire. The college provides an inclusive and supportive learning environment and has a strong focus on ensuring students with additional needs receive the individual support they need to succeed. This is a permanent, term-time only opportunity, ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with young people and wants a role where they can make a tangible difference to students' education and independence.

The role

Working closely with students with SEND, including learners with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), you'll provide practical and academic support both inside and outside the classroom. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing in-class and one-to-one mentoring support for students with SEND.
  • Encouraging students to become increasingly confident and independent learners.
  • Acting as a key worker for designated students with EHCPs and contributing to the annual review process.
  • Working closely with teaching, tutorial and SEND colleagues to monitor individual targets and progress.
  • Helping students manage deadlines and catch up with missed work.
  • Supporting students during work experience placements and educational trips where required.
  • Maintaining accurate records of student support, progress and reviews.
  • Contributing to risk assessments, emergency evacuation plans, medical protocols and exam access arrangements.
  • Attending relevant team meetings, training and development.
  • Supporting with exam invigilation during busy periods where required.

Please note: An important part of this position is providing personal and, when required, intimate care to students. This can include assistance with toileting, changing, feeding, clothing and other individual personal care needs. Appropriate training will be provided, and an additional £5 per hour is payable for hours where qualifying intimate personal care duties are undertaken.

About you

We're looking for someone patient, supportive and non-judgemental who can build positive professional relationships with young people. You should have:

  • English and Maths skills equivalent to Level 2.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence using IT, email and common software applications.
  • The ability to motivate students and help them work towards individual targets.
  • A flexible and responsive approach to different learning styles and individual needs.
  • Good organisation, administration and record-keeping skills.
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding, equality and diversity, or a willingness to develop this knowledge.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider support and teaching team.

Experience supporting young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, including personal care, would be beneficial. Previous experience within Further Education, supporting behaviours of concern or a qualification relating to Specific Learning Difficulties would also be advantageous.

Why consider this opportunity?

This is an opportunity to join an established further education environment with a strong commitment to inclusive learning and student achievement. You'll have access to ongoing training and development alongside a comprehensive range of employee benefits. Benefits include pension schemes, health and wellbeing support, free on-site parking, access to an on-site gym, a cycle-to-work scheme and opportunities for continued professional development. The role is term-time only for 36 weeks of the year, with the salary paid in equal monthly instalments across the academic year.

Safeguarding

This position involves regulated activity with young people and is subject to the appropriate pre-employment and safeguarding checks, including an Enhanced DBS check and Barred List check, satisfactory references, right-to-work checks and other relevant employment checks. It is an offence to apply for this role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
