Are you an experienced Payroll professional available at short notice? We're recruiting for a Payroll Manager to join a well‑established organisation in Hull on a temporary contract, supporting the finance team during a busy period. This is a hands‑on role where you'll take ownership of the end‑to‑end payroll function, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time while maintaining compliance with all relevant legislation.

The Role

Reporting to the Financial Controller, you'll oversee the day‑to‑day delivery of payroll services, ensuring accuracy, efficiency and compliance across the payroll function. You'll also act as the key contact for payroll queries, pensions administration and statutory reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the end‑to‑end payroll process for the organisation
  • Ensure payroll is processed accurately and within agreed deadlines
  • Maintain compliance with HMRC legislation, pension regulations and GDPR
  • Process new starters, leavers and contractual changes
  • Calculate statutory payments including SSP, SMP and SPP
  • Reconcile payroll control accounts and support month‑end processes
  • Produce payroll reports and year‑end documentation, including P45s and P60s
  • Administer workplace pensions and auto‑enrolment
  • Support internal and external payroll audits
  • Assist with payroll process improvements where appropriate

About You

  • Proven experience managing an end‑to‑end payroll function
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements
  • Experience with pension administration and auto‑enrolment
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills
  • The ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines
  • Strong communication skills with a proactive approach
  • Payroll qualification (CIPP) is advantageous but not essential
