Murphy is recruiting for a Principal Engineer to join our growing Infrastructure team, delivering major infrastructure projects across the UK.

We provide end-to-end services for major infrastructure companies such as National Highways, National Grid and for several water-only companies including Thames Water, United Utilities, SES Water, Bristol Water and South East Water.

A day in the life of a Murphy Principal Tunnelling Engineer:

  • Agree technical requirements with client, ensuring it is fully understood, questioning and challenging where necessary.
  • Support development of shaft sinking, portal and tunnelling constructability input at tender
  • Consider client constraints and requirements in development of solutions and methods
  • Support Identification of options, consider and propose preferred solutions based on multi-factor evaluation to support work winning pursuits
  • Liaise with Specialists particularly geotechnical and material to confirm methods and equipment selection is appropriate for the specific ground conditions
  • Identify temporary work requirements required for identified options
  • Liaise with temporary works coordinator, produce briefs
  • Liaise with specialist tunnelling suppliers and procurement
  • Liaise with planning and estimating functions during tender and 1st stage phases of project
  • Author and support development of technical responses for PQQ and tender submissions
  • Identify risks and opportunities and ensure they are logged, developed and included in optioneering and construction phases
  • Identify and assess the technical opportunities for value engineering.
  • Prepare conceptual designs with a view to the preparation of safe, practical and economic designs in accordance with current legislation.
  • Prepare detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes including calculations, design risk assessments and sufficiently detailed sketches for the preparation of working drawings.
  • Provide a technical assessment and review of 3rd Party designs, ensuring compliance with the brief to meet client and Murphy requirements.
  • Provide advice and guidance on design issues.

  • Previous experience of working in a design office for either a consultant, contractor or specialist temporary works supplier
  • Knowledge of the design and checking process relating to Category 1, 2 and 3 design checks in accordance with BS5975.
  • A knowledge of permanent works design and construction methods (desirable)
  • Experience of some, but not all, of the following is desirable:
    • Design and/or checking of: Formwork, Falsework, Scaffolding, Needling, Propping, Site hoardings, Haul roads, Tower crane bases, Mobile crane outrigger foundations, Working platforms for piling rigs and other forms of tracked plant, Excavation support and slope stability (timber and proprietary equipment), Lifting / Jacking / Sliding
  • IEng/CEng – Desirable but not essential
