About Therma-Mech Therma-Mech is one of the UK's leading district heating contractors, delivering complex energy infrastructure projects across the country. We specialise in buried heat network pipework, energy centres, customer connections and associated civil engineering works for major clients within the low‑carbon energy sector. Due to continued growth, we are looking to recruit an experienced Project Manager to join our delivery team covering Bristol and the South West of England. This role is ideally suited to someone with a strong civil engineering background who also has an appreciation of mechanical installation and commissioning, or is keen to develop their knowledge within the district heating sector. Working closely with our Delivery, Commercial and Engineering teams, you will take ownership of projects from mobilisation through to completion, ensuring they are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- 1. Project Delivery Take overall responsibility for the successful delivery of civil engineering and district heating projects from mobilisation through to completion. Work with our Planning team to develop, manage and maintain project programmes, ensuring contractual milestones and client expectations are achieved. Coordinate civil engineering and mechanical workstreams to deliver fully integrated project solutions. Ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, to specification and in accordance with contractual requirements.
- 2. Leadership & Operational Management Lead and support Site Managers, Engineers and Supervisors, ensuring projects are effectively planned and resourced. Provide leadership to our operatives and specialist subcontractors via the site management team. Monitor productivity, programme performance and resource utilisation, implementing corrective actions where required. Promote a collaborative, high-performing culture focused on safety, quality and continuous improvement.
- 3. Commercial & Programme Management Manage project budgets, forecasts and cash flow in conjunction with the Commercial team. Ensure labour, plant, materials and subcontractors are utilised efficiently to maximise project performance. Identify and manage project risks, opportunities and mitigation measures. Support the management of compensation events, variations, early warnings and change control under NEC & EPC contracts. Monitor commercial performance and ensure robust project reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
- 4. Client & Stakeholder Management Act as the principal point of contact for clients throughout project delivery. Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, local authorities, statutory undertakers and other stakeholders. Chair progress meetings and provide regular updates on programme, commercial performance, risks and key milestones. Work proactively to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and the travelling public during construction activities.
- 5. Health, Safety, Environment & Quality Lead Therma-Mech's Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards across all project activities. Ensure Construction Phase Plans, RAMS, permits and all pre‑construction documentation are prepared, reviewed and implemented. Undertake regular site visits, inspections and audits to ensure compliance with company procedures, client requirements and statutory legislation. Promote a proactive safety culture through visible leadership and continual engagement with project teams.
- 6. Technical & Design Coordination Coordinate design development with internal and external engineering teams to ensure buildable and efficient construction solutions. Resolve technical issues and construction challenges in collaboration with designers, suppliers and subcontractors. Oversee testing, commissioning and client demonstrations, ensuring all systems are completed and handed over successfully. Ensure Operation & Maintenance manuals, quality records, commissioning documentation and project close‑out information are completed to the required standard.
- 7. Reporting & Project Controls Produce accurate project reports covering programme, commercial performance, health & safety, quality and project risks. Maintain project documentation using company digital systems. Monitor KPIs and identify opportunities to improve project delivery and operational performance. Ensure accurate project records are maintained to support contractual and commercial processes.
About You
- Essential Proven experience managing civil engineering, utilities or infrastructure projects.
- Strong leadership and people management skills with experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent commercial awareness, including budgeting, forecasting and cost control.
- Experience managing subcontractors, direct labour and supply chain partners.
- Strong understanding of programme management and project reporting.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Thorough understanding of Health & Safety legislation, CDM Regulations and quality management.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office and digital project management systems.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Desirable Experience delivering district heating, buried pipeline or energy infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of mechanical pipework installation, pressure testing and commissioning.
- Experience working under NEC contracts.
- SMSTS.
- CSCS Black Card.
- Temporary Works Coordinator.
- Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
