Overview
As Garage Manager in the Transport Department, you lead the Vehicle Maintenance Unit to keep the fleet safe, compliant, and available. You’ll manage workshop resources, schedules, and budgets while driving a proactive maintenance culture and continuous improvement. You’ll collaborate with internal and external partners to optimize reliability and operational efficiency. This role offers impact by shaping maintenance practices and fleet performance within a leading dairy distributor.

Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day VMU operations ensuring safe, efficient maintenance to high standards
- Manage workshop resources, labour allocation, and repair schedules to maximise fleet availability
- Ensure compliance with DVSA, Operator Licence, health and safety and company standards
- Drive preventative maintenance culture to improve reliability and reduce operating costs
- Monitor workshop performance, spend, and KPI related to fleet engineering
- Lead, coach and develop engineering and workshop teams with accountability and continuous improvement
- Investigate failures, defects and incidents; implement corrective actions
- Build relationships with internal stakeholders, customers, suppliers, manufacturers and third-party service providers
- Maintain housekeeping, safety, quality and audit readiness across workshop activities
- Support fleet replacement, vehicle specification and engineering improvement initiatives to boost performance
Key requirements
- Previous management experience in fleet maintenance, transport engineering, commercial vehicle, or workshop environments
- Technical knowledge of HGVs, trailers, maintenance systems, defect management, and best practices
- Understanding of fleet compliance, maintenance planning, vehicle legislation, and risk management
- Experience managing workshop performance, budgets, and resource planning
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in fast-paced settings
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Good IT skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Knowledge of transport and logistics operations and the role of engineering in service delivery
