The Tom Stuart-Smith Studio is seeking an experienced Landscape Architect to join the practice of 20 designers and support staff. Tom Stuart-Smith established his landscape design business in 1998 and has since designed an impressive portfolio of large private and public gardens, set in both the countryside as well as inner city locations in the UK, Europe, North Africa, India, the US and the Caribbean. The studio is based at Stuart-Smith’s home, Serge Hill, near St Albans in a recently built contemporary studio, immersed in a mix of established gardens and new horticultural growing spaces.
The candidate will be working on a variety of public and private gardens, urban spaces, and historic landscapes in the UK and overseas. You will also be encouraged to be involved in the Serge Hill community project, which includes the new Plant Library and was set up as part of a not-for-profit initiative by Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith to transform health and wellbeing, and foster community inclusion through gardening and other forms of creativity.
Staff at the practice are supported with fees and mentoring on the Landscape Institute’s Pathway to Chartership, an annual CPD allowance, and develop practical horticultural skills through paid gardening experience in the Serge Hill Orchard and Dairy gardens. A close-knit, friendly and supportive team, so much so that they reportedly cook and eat together using produce grown in the Serge Hill vegetable plot.

- Dedicated, organised, self-motivated and willing to work on a range of projects. Ability to work effectively both individually and within a team and capability to work under pressure, to the highest standard for project deadlines.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills, including the ability to sketch and develop designs on paper as well as digitally. Strong skills in AutoCAD, Sketchup, Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite.
- Eligibility to work in the UK and Europe and possession of any relevant visas.
- Position: Permanent
- Salary: competitive
