Theatre Royal Stratford east is looking for a creative and adaptable technician with a strong lighting bias to join our Production team at this historic producing house on a 1 year fixed term contract.

Delivering an exceptional and diverse programme of theatre.

To work within the team on both our own critically acclaimed and award-winning productions, external hires and co-pros.

  • The successful candidate will as part of the production department;
  • Specialise in theatrical lighting, supporting both Stratford East productions and guest productions.
  • Rig, patch and focus lighting fixtures and equipment.
  • Build, install and manage lighting practicals to a high standard.
  • Program and operate ETC Eos family consoles, including pre-programmed cue stack and live busking.
  • Confidently integrate generic, pixel, LED and moving-light fixtures.
  • Produce accurate and meticulous show paperwork, including running documents, records and archives suitable for production handover, revival and transfer.
  • Competently operate sound, lighting, video and stage equipment as required.
  • Maintain production equipment in good working order and in accordance with relevant regulatory standards and legislation.
  • Accurately interpret, draw and implement theatrical plans and technical drawings.
  • Assist with the rigging, patching and focusing of sound and AV equipment when required.
  • Rig and fly scenery in conjunction with the Head of Stage and Stage Department when required.
  • Maintain the professional presentation of the theatre and associated spaces.
  • Manage equipment stores, including asset management and cataloguing.
  • Supervise and support casual and freelance technicians.
  • Work closely with Production, Stage Management, Operations, Front of House, creatives and visiting companies.

About You

You will be a curious, enquiring and supportive team member who embraces new ideas and is committed to delivering high-quality work.

You will have

  • At least two years' industry experience in lighting, with a good working knowledge of theatre production practices and associated equipment.
  • Experience of working within a producing theatre environment.
  • Strong practical lighting skills, including rigging, patching, focusing and programming.
  • Experience with ETC Eos consoles.
  • A good understanding of theatre technical operations across lighting, sound, video and stage.
  • The ability to safely wire a plug and build and operate basic PA, lighting and video systems.
  • The ability to safely rig and fly bars, including hemp, counterweight and automated systems.
  • Knowledge of basic theatre knots, including clove hitch, bowline and half hitch.
  • Basic carpentry skills and confidence using hand and power tools.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people.
  • A self-motivated, resourceful and adaptable approach.
  • A genuine passion for art, culture and live performance.
  • Technical Knowledge & Safety

You should have an up-to-date understanding of health and safety best practice and relevant legislation, including theatre-specific standards such as:

  • LOLER
  • PUWER
  • IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671, 18th Edition)
  • ISITEE (formerly PAT)
  • CDM

You should also have an awareness of the Theatre Green Book and the responsible use of materials, as well as an awareness of theatre engineering principles.

Industry-recognised qualifications are welcomed, including ABTT Bronze, PASMA, IPAF, NIC 7909, Work at Height, Eos, Dante and CDM.
