Our mission is to create, entertain, and inspire. Since it opened on the banks of the Lagan in 1968, the Lyric Theatre has been Northern Ireland’s most important producing house dedicated to staging new playwrights and new work. Over the years it has acted as a lightning rod attracting a wide variety of theatre artists from all backgrounds. This cultural exchange and communal sharing have been a vitally creative and energetic aspect of Belfast and the North’s cultural life.
The Lyric engages with communities right across Northern Ireland through our inclusive programming; touring of our work; and an extensive outreach programme with a special emphasis on children and young people. Our award-winning collaboration with Hydebank Prison, Dept of Justice and PSNI with Blackout has been seen by almost 12,000 young people, teachers and community leaders across 80 schools and community venues. Our recently created new writing department is led by a full-time Literary Manager and Dramaturg, Rebecca Mairs. Rebecca runs the Lyric’s New Playwrights Programme providing dramaturgical support for new and emerging writers. In the last 3 years this programme has supported 16 emerging playwrights from hundreds of applicants across Ireland and the UK.
