The Football Data Performance & Technology Lead plays a critical role in enhancing football performance standards across the WSL Football's leagues. This hybrid role combines strategic leadership with the provision of technical analysis insights to inform player performance, tactical insights, injury prevention, and wellbeing. The role will oversee data-driven initiatives, collaborate with clubs to elevate performance standards, and ensure the league remains at the forefront of football innovation and technology.

This position directly impacts the league's ability to enhance player performance, promote tactical excellence, and prioritise player welfare. The appointment will play a pivotal role in driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and shaping the future of football standards across the WSL Football.

What will you be doing?

  • Match Footage, Tactical Analysis, and Data Integration
    • Match Footage Management: Coordinate the capture, storage, and distribution of match footage, ensuring timely, high-quality access for analysis. Utilize platforms such as Hudl/DVMS, Wyscout, and Opta.
    • Performance Analysis Reports: Deliver post-match technical analysis, including tactical breakdowns (e.g., formations, key movements), and distribute league-wide insights.
    • Data Integration: Oversee the creation and maintenance of a centralized platform consolidating player transfers, performance, tactical, injury, and wellbeing data. Work within League & Performance and Development team supporting our internal departments such as commercial, with data and technology solutions to inform league performance projects.
    • Strategy Framework: Develop a strategic framework and oversee technology infrastructure, collaborating with clubs, stakeholders (Premier League, FA, PGMOL) (establishing a working group) and league executives to deliver data-driven insights that elevate game quality, player welfare, and innovation.
    • Data-Driven Performance Standards: Develop and refine metrics to assess player development, match intensity, and tactical effectiveness.
    • Emerging Technologies: Explore and integrate innovative tools, such as AI-driven models, to deepen insights and improve league-wide analytics capabilities.
    • Data Governance: Implement robust policies to ensure data quality, security, and compliance with privacy regulations.
  • Club Collaboration and Education
    • Educational Support: Conduct workshops and training sessions to empower clubs in using performance analysis tools and interpreting data effectively.
    • Club Engagement: Establish regular feedback loops with clubs to adapt tools and methodologies based on their evolving needs.
    • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work with league executives, clubs, and external organizations (FA, PGMOL, PL etc.) to align data initiatives.
  • KPI Monitoring and Visualization
    • Dashboard Development: Design and manage user-friendly dashboards tracking player transfers, performance, injury data, and tactical trends. Ensure accessibility for club staff, coaches, and executives.
    • League Reporting: Provide regular updates on key performance metrics to league leadership, including trends and actionable insights.
    • Operational Oversight: Act as a point of contact for performance data, collaborating with internal departments and vendors to support league objectives.
    • Resource Optimization: Manage budgets related to data and technology while planning for future growth in infrastructure and team capabilities.
    • Execute additional tasks as required to meet Women's Super League Football's changing priorities.
    • Comply with all company policies and procedures to ensure the highest standards of health, safety, and well-being can be maintained.

  • Football Knowledge: Strong understanding of tactics, player metrics, and possess the ability to integrate data sets and associated insights.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in tools like Tableau, Power BI, and Excel, with hands-on experience using platforms like Hudl/DVMS and Wyscout.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to define and execute a vision for league-wide data and technology integration. This will be in collaboration with leagues digital, technology and operations teams.
  • Communication Skills: Expertise in translating complex data into actionable insights for diverse audiences across the leagues and their clubs.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Proven ability to foster a collaborative culture across clubs and internal departments.

Desirable Experience & Qualifications

  • Post Graduate degree in Sports Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • 4-6 years of experience in sports performance analysis, with a focus on football.
  • Demonstrated expertise in tactical analysis, player performance (experience working with football data visualization is a bonus).
  • Experience working in a league, club, or federation setting, managing performance data and technology tools. Candidates from sports data agencies also considered.
