We are seeking a dynamic individual with a strong analytical mindset and passion for optimising physical performance in football. The Football Data Scientist will play a pivotal role in data-driven decision making processes in the Men’s 1st team; working with physical testing, training, match, and player status data to provide valuable insights to all key stakeholders. The Football Data Scientist will also be responsible for supporting the development of the wider physical performance data insights strategy across the club.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performance data technology and systems management
- Ensure testing and monitoring systems and equipment are working effectively at training and games.
- Efficient and effective collection and processing of all physical data sources as required, including but not limited to, player physical and well-being status, physical testing data and on-pitch tracking systems.
- Management of all data systems with a high attention to detail, ensuring data accuracy, consistency and quality reporting, analysis and data pipelines.
- Provision of live GPS monitoring at training session and games.
- Adhere to a strict code of confidentiality in respect of any information relating to Rangers Football Club and its operation.
- Insight development and feedback
- Provide and collaborate on daily, weekly and phase overviews including loading insights, player physical status, performance and development.
- Work closely with the Performance team to monitor physical workloads of the squad, highlighting individuals or trends that require attention.
- Lead on data visualisation, ensuring that training and match reports inform and drive decision making processes.
- Conduct additional data analysis on request from stakeholders.
- Meet daily with Performance & Medical staff to actively participate in strategies regarding player readiness to perform and rehabilitation.
- Collaborate with the S&C coach in physical profiling and performance testing.
- Assist with pitch and gym-based training and rehabilitation sessions as required.
- Cultivate effective relationships and excellent communication with staff, coaches, players, and the wider club staff to facilitate strong operational delivery and deliver the strategic aims.
- Systems & strategy development & innovation
- Own and continuously evolve the club’s performance data systems.
- Work with multidisciplinary staff specialising in data to enhance the entire club’s (Men’s, Women’s and Academy) physical data insights provision.
- Attend and lead department meetings on data systems and insights development.
- Undertake personal CPD as appropriate to meet the demands of the role, keep up to date with research and trends in performance data science, and maintain professional standards.
- Play a key role in promoting a positive high-performance culture.
- Perform any other duties as required by your line manager within the scope of the role.
THE CANDIDATE
- MSc in Sports Science or related field. Alternatively, a degree or experience in fields of statistics, mathematics or computer science is advantageous.
- Industry experiences demonstrating strong analytical, computational and visualisation skills.
- Excellent understanding of the physical demands in football/team sports.
- Experience with football/team sport data sources and analysis using data tracking, collection, analysis and feedback tools such as Catapult, VALD, Kitman labs, Excel, Power BI, Tableau.
- Ability to present and explain data-driven insights to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and impactful way.
- Ability or desire to learn coding language and design dashboards and visual tools that make complex data accessible.
- A strong communicator with the ability to build key relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- A team player, able to work within a multidisciplinary team.
- Desirable: UKSCA accredited, or on the pathway to becoming accredited.
