The Ark is a local charity supporting people with disabilities and long-term health conditions, unpaid and family carers and the wider community. We are looking for more volunteers to work alongside our staff to help us provide more social groups and activities for our members. This could be going to the cinema with a group to watch the latest action movie, serving tea and cake at one of our popular tea dances or even a day trip to London. We work with a diverse membership aged 18-90 and our activities reflect this. If you would like to volunteer with us all you will need is some enthusiasm and a desire to make a difference and support people in your local community. You can choose how much time you dedicate. If you are over 18 and would like to be part of our wonderful team then apply to become a Social Activities Volunteer today!

As part of this support, we run a number of different social clubs and activities including:

  • Project 73, weekly social/activities group for people with autism with minimum support needs
  • Night Owls, a group for people with learning disabilities who meet about once a month and stay up late!
  • Friday Night Project, a weekly disco for people with disabilities
  • Day trips and events

We need volunteers to help out at these clubs and activities alongside staff to ensure they are run safely and well.

What you will be doing:

  • Attending venues (in the community or at The Ark)
  • Being on hand if information or support is needed
  • Assisting in the smooth running of events (e.g. tea dances, discos)
  • Working to empower people, improving their quality of life and reducing social isolation
  • Developing professional but friendly relationships with people

If you are also a volunteer driver, you may be asked if you wish to carry out a task that combines elements of both roles; providing transport to clubs/activities where transport is a barrier to a person’s attendance.

The skills you need:

  • Friendly, patient and non-judgmental
  • A good listener
  • Good communication skills
  • Maintain client confidentiality

What's in it for you:

  • You can fit in volunteering tasks around your life
  • Meeting new people in the community
  • Experience of working with people living with disability

Please note, we are committed to protecting and keeping people safe. We select, check and manage our volunteers to make sure that we are able to do this.
