Senior Quantity Surveyor in Leicester

This is a proper Senior QS role…

You'll have responsibility for the commercial performance of projects, but just as importantly, you'll be someone the wider project team can lean on when it comes to contracts, risk, valuations, variations and those inevitable conversations around money.

We're working with an established project-led business within the construction sector that is looking for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to strengthen its commercial function.

There's a good mix here. You'll still be hands-on with projects and clients, but you'll also have responsibility for supporting and developing the wider QS team.

We're not looking for someone from one incredibly narrow industry background. If you've worked within construction, infrastructure, specialist contracting or a similar project environment and understand how to commercially manage contracts from award through to final account, we'd be interested in talking to you.

What will you be doing?

You'll take ownership of the commercial side of projects, including:

• Reviewing contracts and identifying commercial risks and opportunities
• Negotiating contract terms and protecting the business commercially
• Managing project costs, valuations and financial reporting
• Managing variations and ensuring additional works are properly instructed and valued
• Preparing and monitoring client accounts alongside the project team
• Carrying out Cost Value Reconciliations and monitoring project profitability
• Reviewing project performance against the original estimate
• Ensuring applications for payment are accurate and submitted on time
• Meeting with client Quantity Surveyors to agree applications, valuations and certified amounts
• Challenging outstanding instructions and ensuring contractual records are properly maintained
• Negotiating final accounts and outstanding payments
• Supporting Project and Contract Managers with commercial decision making
• Carrying out site measurements and surveying where required
• Liaising with clients, subcontractors and other members of the professional team
• Maintaining accurate commercial information and project records
• Producing end-of-project commercial reviews
• Supporting, managing and developing members of the QS team

What are we looking for?

You'll already be operating at Senior QS level, or you'll be an experienced Quantity Surveyor who is ready to take that next step.

We'd expect you to bring:

• Strong Quantity Surveying experience within a construction or contracting environment
• A solid understanding of NEC and JCT contracts , including contract administration and commercial risk
• Experience managing valuations, variations, applications and final accounts
• Strong commercial awareness and financial understanding
• Confidence negotiating with clients and other commercial professionals
• Experience identifying contractual risks before they become expensive problems
• Good knowledge of construction processes and contractual obligations
• Strong Excel and general IT skills
• Excellent organisation and attention to detail
• The confidence to challenge when needed without turning every conversation into a battle
• Previous experience supporting or managing other QSs would be a real advantage

This role would particularly suit someone who enjoys being close to the projects rather than purely sitting at a spreadsheet. You'll be involved with the people delivering the work, talking to clients, sorting problems and making sure the commercial position of each project is properly understood.

You'll need to be comfortable taking ownership, making decisions and being the commercial voice in the room when required.

There's a strong pipeline of work ahead and a healthy order book, but just as importantly, this is a business that puts its people at the centre of how it operates. They want people to feel part of what they're building, not just another name on an org chart.
