Sutton & District United Synagogue is a warm and welcoming orthodox community, located on the borders of south-west London and Surrey yet only 12 miles from central London.The membership covers a wide geographic area and a broad range of age and observance.

We seek an energetic and enthusiastic Rabbi/Rabbinic Couple with a modern orthodox approach to spiritually inspire, encourage and embrace the community.

The Rabbi will be passionate, self-motivated and well organised, able to confidently daven and leyn, educate and engage.The Rebbezen will partner and support him in all communal matters.

The aim is to build a close and meaningful relationship with existing members, provide pastoral care and actively lead the Sutton community.

Working with the lay leadership to encourage and strengthen the communityโ€™s religious, pastoral and educational needs, they will be ambassadors representing Sutton in the wider Jewish and secular community.

Applicants must have a Certificate of Semicha acceptable to the Chief Rabbi, which should be included with your application.

Principal Duties

  • The Rebbetzen must be active in the following areas:
  • To regularly attend Shul services on Shabbat and festivals, offering and be a welcoming face to regular attendees and to visitors irrespective of their level of observance
  • To engage with members of the Sutton Community in a friendly and approachable manner
  • Alongside the Rabbi, to provide hospitality and entertainment to members of the Sutton Community, particularly on Shabbat and festivals
  • Where appropriate, to visit and offer support to new mothers, the disabled, sick and bereaved members of the Sutton Community
  • To provide guidance and spiritual support to brides within the Sutton Community, and to Bat Mitzvah girls including โ€“ and not limited to โ€“ tutoring
  • To accompany the Rabbi at communal social events, and external events where appropriate
  • To perform any other tasks that would reasonably be expected of an active and committed Rebbetzen in a mainstream, modern orthodox community
  • To utilize, where appropriate, social media for the purpose of promoting and attracting those living within the catchment area who are unaffiliated or unaware of what the Sutton Community has to offer.

  • All employees are required to be aware of their responsibilities towards health and safety and to adhere to fire regulations
  • To be expected in undertaking the above role to comply with any policies and procedures that United Synagogue may issue any other reasonable duty as may be assigned that is consistent with the nature of the job and its level of responsibility

  • The job holder must be prepared to work unsocial hours from time to time, including weekends
  • This job description may be amended to meet the changing requirements of the community at any time after full discussion with the job holder
  • Because of the nature of the work for which you are applying, this post is exempt from the provisions of Section 4(2) of the Rehabilitation Act, 1974, by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, 1974, (Exceptions) Order 1975
  • A valid and current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate (formerly CRB) that is satisfactory to the United Synagogue will be required

2. Modern Orthodoxy

  • Modern outlook, connects with current secular issues
  • Open and flexible approach towards people from differing backgrounds
  • Sensitive to mixed marriage couples and their children

3. Technical skills

  • Proficient with technology and social media.
  • Committed to building community, both in-person and online (via social media).

4. Other

  • Enhanced DBS clearance required.
  • Valid UK driving licence (or equivalent)
