The Young Families Engagement Coordinator role is designed to strengthen the future vitality of the Mill Hill community by focusing on engagement, growth and long‑term connection — particularly for young adults, young families, and future community leaders. The role is forward‑looking, developmental, aimed at nurturing relationships, deepening belonging, and building sustainable Jewish life for the next generation. This role contributes to the well‑being & cohesion of the community.

MAIN DUTIES

  • RELIGIOUS & SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP
    • Participation in Shabbat and weekday services, including leading davening and leyning where required.
    • Contribute to explanatory services, programmes and learning experiences, including digital or hybrid formats.
    • Supporting and officiating at lifecycle events including bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings, funerals and shiva in coordination.
  • YOUNG JEWISH LIFE, FAMILIES AND ENGAGEMENT PATHWAYS
    • Build strong, sustained relationships with young adults, newly married couples and young families, creating clear and welcoming pathways into synagogue and community life.
    • Design and lead engagement initiatives, including a 'first five years of marriage' programme and a structured new-members (first year) engagement journey.
    • Support parents in nurturing Jewish identity at home and developing long‑term connection to community life.
    • Act as a consistent, trusted relational presence for families navigating early stages of communal involvement.
  • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, SCHOOLS & CIVIC RELATIONSHIPS
    • Building meaningful relationships and programming with local Jewish schools, supporting pupils, parents and staff.
    • Representing the synagogue in local interfaith and civic engagement, strengthening relationships with the wider community.
    • Contributing to antisemitism education and awareness, where appropriate.
    • Building strong relationships with members of all ages, especially youth, young adults, and young families and infusing those relationships with Jewish learning at all levels.
    • Engaging less active or marginalised members and encouraging attendance and involvement.
    • Regularly hosting Shabbat and festival meals and creating a welcoming communal culture.
  • YOUTH LEADERSHIP
    • Hold direct line‑management responsibility for youth leaders, where applicable, including support, guidance and development.
    • Play an active leadership role in youth engagement strategy.
    • Work collaboratively with the Community Rabbi, youth professionals and Tribe to ensure joined‑up youth provision across age groups.
  • PASTORAL CARE
    • Offer guidance to engaged and newly married couples as part of longer‑term relationship building.
    • Work in close coordination with the Community & Senior Rabbi to ensure appropriate coverage and avoid duplication of pastoral responsibility.
  • EDUCATION, INNOVATION & WELLBEING
    • Deliver accessible learning opportunities for adults, families and young people, including explanatory services and entry‑level learning, Jewish values‑based learning, and well‑being‑focused content (e.g., mindfulness, resilience, Jewish approaches to wellbeing).
    • Develop or host wellbeing and health‑based talks, seminars or speakers, working with professionals where appropriate.
    • Innovate programming that reflects contemporary Jewish life and evolving community needs.
  • GAP YEAR, STUDENTS & YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
    • Act as mentor and guide to gap‑year students and university students.
    • Develop leadership pathways that encourage future lay leadership and board or service involvement.
  • TEAMWORK, LEADERSHIP & COMMUNICATION
    • Partnering with the Community Manager and their team to improve how the community communicates and promotes its life and activity — helping ensure programmes, learning and values are visible, engaging and accessible.
    • Supporting the development of community infrastructure, partnerships and communications.
    • Working closely with Senior & Community Rabbis, Rebbetzins, youth teams, lay leaders and volunteers to deliver a coherent and joined‑up community strategy.
  • GENERIC DUTIES
    • Committed to the aims of the United Synagogue and act as an ambassador for the organisation.
    • Comply with The United Synagogue’s policy and procedures and code of expectations.
    • Bring to the attention of senior staff any health and safety requirements, which become obvious. In the event of any immediate danger, take the appropriate action to reduce risk to physical danger to employees, members, contractors, volunteers, children, parents, visitors or staff.
    • Work collaboratively with other colleagues across the organisation to ensure the United Synagogue can achieve its vision, mission, and strategy.
    • Undertake appropriate training as requested by your line manager in conjunction with the Human Resources Department and be committed to own continuous professional development.
    • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Chief Executive or other designated senior staff/undertaking such other duties that occasionally fall within the purpose of the post.
    • Maintaining high levels of discretion and confidentiality at all times.

  • To be available for appropriate training as required.
  • A working knowledge of Orthodox Judaism, the Jewish Community and Jewish values.

  • Computer literate, fully conversant with Windows, Microsoft Office, email and the Internet.
