Project Manager - INTO in Swindon

The International National Trust Organisations (INTO) brings the global National Trust family together to share knowledge and tools for the protection of cultural and natural heritage. Our programmes and resources facilitate international collaboration in the heritage sector.

We're looking for a proven project manager who is organised, a problem solver and experienced in managing large scale projects. In this role you will have key responsibilities for budgets, project plans, regular reporting, and project board meetings. You will have overall management for the Salt and Stone project, funded by the ALIPH foundation, which has a budget of $400K. You will need to lead and influence operational teams and external stakeholders to ensure the success of the project.

At INTO, we facilitate connections between the world’s National Trusts, bringing together our network of more than 100 heritage NGOs to share best practice and promote the National Trust model for conservation. INTO is embedded in the National Trust and the successful candidate would join INTO’s team. This team currently meets at regular intervals at the National Trust’s headquarters Heelis in Swindon. Occasional meetings are also held in London. We can consider applications from anywhere in the UK, but would expect regular (once a week) attendance in Swindon.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon. We operate a hybrid approach to working and expect colleagues to spend 40-60% of their working week at a National Trust location. There is flexibility within this framework, and the specific working pattern for this role will be discussed in more detail at interview. As this role will work on an international project, some travel may be required to East Africa.

You will ensure that the project progresses as planned, meets its obligations to the funder and achieves the maximum possible reach in promoting its outcome. The role holder may at times represent INTO and the project to the public, including at conferences and other public fora.

This project will safeguard Swahili coastal heritage in Zanzibar and the Comoros by restoring two important historic buildings that are increasingly threatened by climate change, including sea-level rise, salt damage, humidity and extreme weather. Working with local heritage partners and communities, the project combines practical conservation works with climate-adaptive planning, skills training, community engagement and regional knowledge exchange. Through the restoration of the Ba’amnara Mosque in Zanzibar and the Swaniani Princely House in Comoros, the project will strengthen local conservation capacity, support sustainable heritage-based economic opportunities and build the long-term resilience of coastal heritage and the communities that care for it.

You will need to be creative, resourceful, have great initiative and be able to work with all kinds of people and organisations.

Who we're looking for:

• Experience in successfully delivering complex end to end project/programme management, including defining resources, leading procurement securing project teams and matrix management across multiple projects/programmes.
• A recognised Project Management qualification (APM PMQ /Prince or similar) or Programme Management (MSP or similar) or you are actively working towards achieving one, with evidence of ongoing CPD.
• Excellent problem solving and influencing skills, able to confidently work with senior leaders.
• Experience of managing complex and difficult external stakeholder relationships.
• Ability to travel internationally and possess a valid passport.
• Due to the international nature of the role, we will prioritise applicants who can speak project languages (including French and Swahili) and who have experience working internationally.
