Battersea Arts Centre are looking for an experienced Heritage Building and Facilities Manager to join our Operations Team. You'll lead the day-to-day care and maintenance of our iconic Grade II* listed building, ensuring it's safe, welcoming and well-maintained for visitors and staff. Working closely across the organisation, you'll oversee building maintenance, contractor management, health and safety compliance and sustainability, helping to preserve one of London's most unique creative spaces.
The Heritage Building & Facilities Manager will oversee the day-to-day building operations of Battersea Arts Centre. This role will ensure this historic Grade II* listed RIBA award winning building, and its private road and community garden are maintained to the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and functionality. As the Building Manager, you will drive our sustainability commitments through the development of innovative and environmentally conscious practices.
This role alongside other Operational Managers will respond and oversee emergency call outs and may be called on out of hours as we are an operational building and open to the public. The culture at BAC is a collaborative and open one. We work in an open plan space with no closed private offices and frequently work across teams and roles. We organise regular social events and things can get competitive at our annual sports day and Christmas quiz.
Role Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day operations of upkeep and maintenance across BAC's building, private road, and community garden.
- Maintain all facilities to meet customer service standards and health & safety regulations.
- Monitor and deliver the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule.
- Ensure clear and timely H&S reporting.
- Whenever practicable, personally maintain and repair facilities (plumbing, electrics, painting, etc.).
- Oversee and strategically engage with sustainability reporting and carbon footprint improvements.
Team and Collaboration
- Line manage and support the Building Maintenance Technician.
- Act as the main point of contact for internal queries about building maintenance.
- Manage and monitor the maintenance ticket system.
- Collaborate with the Inclusion Manager to enhance BAC's facilities.
- Coordinate with delivery, programming, and events teams.
Skills Contribution
- Lead on sustainability across BAC's operations.
- Deliver annual environmental reporting and monitor energy usage and waste management.
- Manage the Asset Management System and coordinate across teams.
- Contribute to the planned BMS upgrade project.
Business Delivery
- Oversee weekly checks of all internal and external building areas.
- Ensure compliance testing is completed.
- Act as a keyholder and respond to building emergencies when required.
- Supervise external contractors to ensure safe, professional, and high-standard delivery of work.
General Tasks
- Be an active participant in BAC's wider creative life.
- Maintain professional development, staying informed of trends in hospitality, retail, and event services.

Person Specification
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of health & safety legislation and best practice procedures in building maintenance; Good understanding of the safe and effective use of power and hand tools; An interest in sustainable practices.
- Experience: Practical experience of managing maintenance and external supplier contracts; Practical experience in managing premises and facilities operations in a public venue.
- Skills: Strong efficiency and organization with the ability to prioritise maintenance tasks effectively; Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Values: Interest in caring for a heritage building; Proactive approach to maintenance and upkeep in a busy public building.
Terms & Conditions
- This role is 5 days a week across Monday-Saturday; Usual office hours are Monday-Friday 10am-6pm.
- Salary £37,500 gross per annum; Hours 35 hours per week.
- Annual Leave 4 weeks per year, pro rata (5 weeks following one full year of service).
- Probation period 3 months, with a 6 week review.
- Contract Period Permanent.
