The Audio Operator I (A1) is responsible for the live audio mixing and overall sound of live event productions executed in an ESPN facility in conjunction with remote productions. Work will be performed in a fast-paced environment for a wide variety of sports and events relying on non-traditional production approaches.

The Audio Operator I (A1) must be proficient in mixing and monitoring all audio sources for live sports and events, including but not limited to microphones, music, sound effects, replay devices, server playback and natural sound elements. The REMI Audio Operator I (A1) should be experienced with and understand the expectations, workflows and execution of a live event production. They will be responsible for multiple simultaneous mixes and auxiliary feeds to support production needs. They should have a basic understanding of loudness standards, 5.1 and stereo mixes, audio signal types, microphone pickup patterns, time alignment and latency, EQ and compression, and how to utilize each to improve the overall audio mix.

The Audio Operator I (A1) should be able to multi-task and prioritise requests from various members of the production simultaneously. This person is expected to work with the production team to maintain the highest standard and quality of audio presentation for all content delivered by ESPN for client distribution.

Responsibilities
  • Perform live mixing of audio signals within a REMI live event production that meets ESPN standards of 5.1 surround, loudness and quality. Elements can include talent mics, music, sound effects, replay devices, and natural sounds. Utilisation of signal flow, mixing techniques, and technical equipment will be required for multiple simultaneous streams to support production needs.
  • Basic understanding of audio principles, practices and implementation. This can include but is not limited to microphone types, EQ and Compression, Surround vs Stereo audio.
  • Basic ability to troubleshoot technical broadcast equipment, solve workflow issues and effectively communicate the issue and resolution needed.
  • Participates in the development of fellow operations staff through training and workshops. Participation in training programs, (physical, classroom, virtual, etc.) for self-career development and/or regarding any relevant equipment and workflow changes within the operation.
  • Collaboration across the enterprise to plan the needs of the Event Operations team for specific productions.
  • Contributes to administrative work on various platforms (O365, Smartsheet, etc).
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years practical TV Production or related experience at the small to medium broadcast market, digital/streaming platform, and/or comparable collegiate broadcast level.
  • Knowledge of all TV production equipment and technology within assigned operating areas, including, but not limited to: audio mixing consoles, signal flow concepts, equalizers/compressors, metering concepts, audio/video routers, intercom systems, signal conversion equipment, communications panels, microphones/IFB.
  • Ability to perform tasks under tight deadlines, work independently and support simultaneous projects.
  • Scheduling flexibility including the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be willing and able to adapt to a constantly changing environment.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, customer service, organisational, computer and planning skills.
  • Ability to work as a part of a dynamic team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • “Live On-air” mixing experience using industry standard equipment.
  • Knowledge of all TV production equipment and technology within assigned operating areas, including, but not limited to audio mixing consoles, signal flow concepts, equalizers/compressors, metering concepts, audio/video routers, intercom systems, signal conversion equipment, communications panels, microphones/IFBs. Vendors can include but are not limited to Lawo, Riedel, RTS, Unity, Waves, Evertz, Glensound & Sennheiser.
  • The REMI Audio Operator I (A1) must demonstrate proficiency in the use of all broadcast equipment and technology within assigned operating areas. They are responsible for understanding complex technical workflows within a fixed facility as well as interconnectivity with remote equipment and sites. They will be expected to participate in troubleshooting efforts and communicate with teams across ESPN as well as external stakeholders to resolve technical issues.
  • Basic understanding of building a digital audio console file from scratch based on production needs and requests.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack, & Smartsheet.
  • Experience working with non-traditional production models, including Remote Integrated productions, Remote Controlled productions and All-in-One productions.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
Required Education
  • High School, Vocational Diploma or Equivalent.
Preferred Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Studio/Television Production or related field.

Additional Information: Must be able to work nights, holidays and weekends.
