Job role is from 22.5 (3 days) to 35 hours (5 days) per week. You must have UK experience of working as a Health Care Assistant in a Hospital or General Practice environment.
Main duties of the job
The Healthcare Assistant works under the direction and supervision of the practice nursing team and GPs, using initiative within their scope of practice. They are accountable for their actions, recognising the limits of their competence and seeking guidance when required. Training will be provided to support the safe delivery of duties. The post holder will undertake a range of clinical tasks including:
- Phlebotomy
- Adult immunisations under patient specific directives
- Performing ECGs, 24-hour ECGs and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
- Carrying out new patient health checks and NHS health checks
- Measuring and recording vital signs
- Completing chronic disease monitoring including diabetes and hypertension
- Undertaking urinalysis
- Recording INR results
- Supporting wound care and removing sutures or clips
- Assisting with minor operations and LARC clinics
In addition, the post holder will act as a chaperone, manage administrative tasks, and ensure accurate clinical coding and record keeping. They will identify vulnerable patients, maintain stock and cleanliness of clinical areas, liaise with internal and external teams, and communicate results to patients. The role requires maintaining confidentiality, adhering to data protection standards, engaging with training and team meetings, and responding to clinical queries. The Healthcare Assistant will support the wider practice team and undertake additional duties as required to meet service needs.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a minimum of one year’s experience working as a Healthcare Assistant and hold the Care Certificate or be willing to complete it. They will be trained and competent in phlebotomy and have the ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records. Experience of working within practice-based clinical protocols and evidence-based practice is essential, along with a good understanding of infection prevention and control procedures. The post holder will be required to keep themselves updated with relevant national guidance related to their area of practice and demonstrate competence in clinical documentation and coding to ensure high standards of patient care and record keeping.
Desirable criteria include holding the Care Certificate and/or an NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care. The successful candidate will ideally have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) qualification within the last 12 months, along with experience working as a Healthcare Assistant within General Practice. Familiarity with clinical systems such as EMIS Web is advantageous. Additional desirable skills include the ability to undertake wound care and experience or competence in administering vaccinations.
