MBIO30 - Public and Community Engagement Coordinator (0.6 FTE) - Fixed Term Contract (12 months)

The School of Medicine and Biosciences at UWL is an interdisciplinary research-driven School, embedded within an area of West London with diverse populations and significant pockets of both deprivation and affluence. We work in partnership with policy makers and practitioners to improve the health of our communities and reduce inequalities, developing and delivering hyperlocal health and social care initiatives, which have the potential to scale up locally and nationally. We deliver research-led undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses in Biosciences and Dementia Care.

Our research themes include: Ageing and dementia; Healthcare inequalities; Public Health; Gene-targeted cancer therapy; and Translational Medicine.

The Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory is a flagship Institute based within the School of Medicine and Biosciences, delivering interdisciplinary applied research and education. Our focus is on delivering the evidence to inform high quality, cutting edge, health and social care to benefit people living with dementia, older people, and their care partners and families.

At the heart of our mission is to ensure the most vulnerable populations of people living with dementia and older people have better experiences of health and social care and are supported in living well and living at home for longer. All our research and education programmes are guided by an inclusive approach.

We are an interdisciplinary team of over 20 academics, with expertise in psychology, social policy, epidemiology, nursing, sociology, and the arts, with our research drawing upon a wide range of methodologies. Our research funding incorporates NIHR and ESRC funding, funding from national and international charities, and philanthropic support. We have established a reputation for the rapid translation of our research into impact, which is informing public discourse, shaping the policy agenda, and translated into practice improvements.

Our postgraduate education programmes offer interdisciplinary, research focused, evidence-based teaching and supervision. Our postgraduate courses are designed to cultivate leaders in ageing and dementia care and improve practice across health and social care settings.

The Public and Community Engagement Coordinator will play a central role in developing, delivering and embedding Public and Community Engagement activities across the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory (GIAM). Working closely with researchers, professional services colleagues, community partners and people with lived experience, the postholder will help ensure that public and patient voices inform and shape the Institute's research, priorities and impact.

The successful candidate will, in collaboration with the Public and Community Engagement Lead, coordinate the development of GIAM's Public and Community Engagement programme, creating opportunities for meaningful engagement in research and fostering strong relationships with patients, carers, community organisations, healthcare partners and the wider public. They will also support the delivery of GIAM’s patient and public involvement work, embedding good practice across the Centre. They will coordinate and facilitate engagement activities, support researchers to implement best practice in involvement and co-production, and help build a diverse and sustainable network of public contributors and community partners.

Alongside their engagement responsibilities, the postholder will contribute to GIAM's wider communications and marketing activities. This will include creating engaging content for digital and print channels, supporting events and campaigns, promoting research achievements and helping to raise the profile and impact of the Institute among a range of audiences.

The Public and Community Engagement Coordinator will play a key role in ensuring that GIAM's work remains inclusive, relevant and responsive to the needs of the communities it serves. By championing meaningful involvement, strengthening partnerships and supporting effective communication of research and impact, the postholder will help enhance the visibility, reach and influence of the Institute locally, nationally and internationally.

Requirements for the post holder include:

• Experience in public, patient and community engagement roles.
• Experience of designing, managing, delivering and evaluating engagement activities.
• Knowledge of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) principles and approaches.
• Experience of developing content and supporting marketing, communications or public engagement activities.
• Strong and confident verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to use a range of communication channels, digital platforms and social media.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
