Overview
As a Support Technician you will be an integral member of the Schools Electrical Services team, based in the Schools Central campus facility and also supporting satellite sites.
Your work will involve assisting in the manufacture of specialist equipment and components for research activities, and you will collaborate closely with the Technical Manager and Senior Technical Specialist.
You will need to comprehend technical documentation, provide outstanding customer service, work safely in accordance with health and safety legislation and other compliance procedures, and maintain an organised workspace with minimal waste.
This is a “hands on” role focused on the manufacturing of bespoke solutions and integration of control systems.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the delivery of a comprehensive and proactive technical service to staff and students across the School, ensuring a high level of customer service.
- Support the Technical Manager and other team members in the daily running of the workshop facility to ensure service excellence.
- Build and install electrical control panels and enclosures for new projects.
- Interpret technical documentation.
- Use regularly applied IT applications and CAD software.
- Source and procure materials and equipment, place orders on SAP in compliance with University financial regulations.
Qualifications
Essential
- Minimum qualification: GCSE grade in English and Maths or equivalent Level 2 qualification.
- Ability to select and use appropriate hand tools safely to build enclosures.
- Demonstrated compliance with health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Knowledge of and willingness to learn CAD software to design or develop circuit boards and enclosures.
- Some knowledge of instrumentation software.
- Work efficiently and effectively, maintaining workplace organisation and minimising waste.
- Adaptable to changing demands, workflow and routine tasks.
- Strong methodical and thorough working style.
Desirable
- Knowledge of sensors used in measurement and control systems such as LVDTs, potentiometers, encoders and bridge‑based sensors.
- Demonstrable vocational skills and some experience applying the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
