We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate with strengths in participatory or co‑production methodologies working alongside people living with dementia to support the delivery of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship ‘New musical technologies for older adults' wellbeing: renewal.’ led by Dr Jennifer MacRitchie. This project investigates how emerging technologies can boost opportunities for older adults living with dementia to interact with music, improving their sense of wellbeing, agency and social connection.

The role involves leading participatory community‑based work with people living with dementia who also have diverse hearing profiles, evaluating perceptions of varied musical content, and adapting existing music technology prototypes (e.g., vibro‑tactile interaction and force feedback) to account for hearing differences.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Carry out research design, data collection across Sheffield and Leeds, and analysis.
  • Conduct relationship‑building activities and participatory events with community groups, with some travel expected.
  • Perform evaluations with lived experience groups.
  • Collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative data from evaluations.
  • Author or co‑author academic outputs arising from project data.
  • Regularly consult relevant collaborators to obtain advice and keep them informed of developments.
  • Make ethical decisions in your role, embedding the University sustainability strategy into your working activities whenever possible.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.

Criteria

Essential:

  • PhD in a relevant topic such as music psychology, dementia studies, or social sciences.
  • Demonstrable experience of using participatory and/or co‑production approaches in research with people living with dementia.
  • Clear evidence of successful independent research.
  • High‑level communication and organisational skills, particularly with stakeholders including healthcare professionals, third‑sector charities and people with lived experience.
  • Working knowledge of emerging technologies in dementia care and evaluation methods.
  • Ability to analyse qualitative data from a range of sources and conduct thematic analysis.
  • Ability to analyse quantitative data.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities as part of a team.
  • Understanding of and commitment to promoting and embedding equality, diversity and inclusion principles and practices.
  • Ability to prepare musical stimuli and/or music for behavioural experiments.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with people with hearing conditions and understanding of their assessment.
