The University of Sheffield invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) on Open Quantum Systems theory funded by the EPSRC working with Dr Jake Iles-Smith. The project seeks to enhance the efficiency and robustness of quantum technologies by developing a versatile framework that combines tensor network methods, optimal control theory, and machine learning. The goal is to design control protocols that minimize decoherence and dissipation in quantum systems strongly influenced by their environment, thereby advancing scalable, high‑fidelity quantum devices for practical applications in computing, sensing, and communication.
The successful candidate will develop and combine non‑perturbative open quantum systems theory with optimal control theory, using analytic methods based on the master equation formalism and numerically exact methods such as the time‑evolved matrix product operator formalism. Collaboration with project partners Dr Alistair Brash and Dr Thomas Elliot will facilitate the development of laboratory‑implementable control protocols.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Develop open quantum systems formalism to simulate solid‑state quantum emitters.
- Develop optimisation frameworks for improving the control of solid‑state quantum devices.
- Engage with experimental groups and analyse experimental data with the formalism.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues in the group and the wider consortium.
- Supervise junior researchers, including MSc and PhD students.
- Write manuscripts for research journals based on own and the team’s work.
- Present work at external scientific meetings, preparing well in advance of deadlines.
- Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Essential Criteria
- PhD in theoretical quantum physics with a focus on open quantum systems (or equivalent experience).
- Strong expertise in quantum optics theory.
- Experience in writing manuscripts for peer‑reviewed journals.
- Effective communication skills: written, verbal, report writing, and presentation experience.
- Ability to develop creative problem‑solving approaches with awareness of long‑term implications.
- Ability to work in a team and collaborate effectively with other researchers.
- Skill in assessing, organising resources, and planning and progressing work activities.
- Working knowledge of non‑perturbative methods in open quantum systems.
