Overview

This NIHR Clinical Lecturer post in Diabetes and Endocrinology has been awarded to the School of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield as part of the prestigious UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)/Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) integrated academic training pathway. The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career in Diabetes and Endocrinology, particularly those who have already undertaken a period of substantive research and now wish to continue developing their research portfolio whilst pursuing higher specialist clinical training. It offers the opportunity to combine clinical training in Diabetes and Endocrinology with a programme of post-doctoral research, providing 50% clinical and 50% academic time.

The postholder will be based within the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working within a strong academic and clinical environment in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The post will provide opportunities to develop an independent programme of research aligned to the candidate’s interests and the strengths of the Sheffield academic and clinical diabetes and endocrinology community. Relevant areas may include, but are not limited to, diabetes, obesity, metabolism, endocrinology, translational medicine and patient‑centred approaches to long‑term condition management.

The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that the post has the required educational and staffing approval and will come with an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)] as part of the South Yorkshire training programme in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The postholder will undertake clinical training leading towards CCT in Diabetes and Endocrinology, with General Internal Medicine where applicable according to the trainee’s training pathway and curriculum requirements.

Objectives of the Integrated Academic Training Programme

• To obtain a CCT in Diabetes and Endocrinology
• To undertake a programme of research
• To identify an area of academic and clinical interest upon which to base an application for an externally funded fellowship or a Clinician Scientist Award

Applicants should have evidence of academic achievement and will hold an MD, PhD or equivalent higher research degree. They should have MRCP or equivalent, be eligible for registration with the GMC, and hold or be eligible to hold a National Training Number in Diabetes and Endocrinology. Applicants who already hold a National Training Number must have at least one year of training remaining before their expected CCT date at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a clear commitment to developing as an academic clinician, with evidence of research outputs, potential for independent funding, and a developing vision for a future clinical academic career in Diabetes and Endocrinology.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University’s achievements as a whole.

Research and Teaching

• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the School, including teaching relevant to Diabetes, Endocrinology, metabolism and clinical medicine.
• Participate in the assessment of students and undertake personal mentoring responsibilities for a small group of students on the MBChB programme.
• Develop a defined programme of post-doctoral research with the aim of establishing national and international recognition in their chosen field.
• Seek and secure peer‑reviewed competitive funding to support research projects and career development.
• Publish research findings in high-quality peer‑reviewed scientific and specialty journals and maintain an up‑to‑date critical understanding of the relevant literature.
• Develop the foundations for an independent research programme, including progressing towards future fellowship funding and, where appropriate, establishing a research team.
• Gain experience and expertise in delivering academic seminars, lectures and presentations to local, national and international audiences.
• Develop effective time‑management skills and maintain an appropriate balance between clinical training, research and teaching duties throughout the appointment and beyond.
• Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Clinical

• Undertake clinical duties within the Diabetes and Endocrinology service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, appropriate to their level of training.
• Work in line with GMC, NHS England and speciality training requirements.
• Contribute to outpatient diabetes and endocrinology clinics.
• Contribute to inpatient diabetes and endocrine care, including ward referrals.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team working and relevant speciality meetings.
• Participate in the appropriate on‑call General Internal Medicine rota where required.
• Maintain progression towards CCT through supervised clinical training, workplace‑based assessments and engagement with the ARCP process.
• Provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
• Demonstrate safe clinical decision‑making.
• Work collaboratively with consultants, specialist nurses, dietitians, podiatrists, pharmacists, trainees and allied health professionals.
• Balance clinical duties with protected academic time, usually on a 50/50 academic and academic basis.
• Maintain clinical competence in Diabetes and Endocrinology while developing an independent academic career.

Administration

You will be required to undertake administrative work in support of the needs of the School of Medicine and Population Health and The University of Sheffield. Administrative duties will be determined with the educational supervisor but should not detract from your research needs.

This post will be supported by excellent facilities for research and academic office accommodation and access to administrative support.

Outline of Typical Week / Job Plan

The post is split 50/50 academic/clinical. The split of clinical and research activities will be organised according to the candidate’s needs in conjunction with the clinical and academic teams.

The University Clinical Library is housed on ‘C’ Floor of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The Medical Library is in the main University Library which is within half a mile of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and offers excellent lending reference and national lending facilities.

Essential Criteria

• MD, PhD or equivalent higher research degree
• Holds MRCP full diploma or equivalent, and holds or is eligible to hold a Diabetes and Endocrinology NTN, with the potential to progress in the specialty
• Holds, or has been benchmarked for, an NTN GMC full registration at the time of appointment and current licence to practise
• Completed core medical training sufficient for entry into specialty training grades
• Experience of teaching undergraduate MBChB students and/or supervising research
• Evidence of innovation in teaching and understanding of current directions in undergraduate medical education
• Demonstrates commitment to further research
• Strong track record of research productivity, including peer‑reviewed publications, and a track record of, or clear plan for, securing external research funding
• Organisational and time‑management skills
• Ability to communicate accurately and concisely, verbally and in writing
• Ability to work productively as part of a multidisciplinary team
