NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Infectious Diseases

The NIHR Clinical Lecturer post in infectious diseases has been awarded to The School of Medicine and Population Health at The University of Sheffield as part of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)/ Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) integrated academic training pathway. The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career in infectious diseases, and in particular those who have already undertaken research and who now wish to continue undertaking research whilst pursuing further training. It offers a 50% clinical and 50% academic time, combining clinical training in infectious diseases with a programme of post-doctoral research.

The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that the post has the required educational and staffing approval and will come with an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)] as part of the South Yorkshire rotation in infectious diseases to train for a combined CCT in Infectious Diseases and either Medical Microbiology (MM), Medical Virology (MV) or General Internal Medicine (GIM). You will have evidence of academic achievement and will hold an MD / PhD or equivalent, have MRCP or equivalent and hold or be eligible to hold an NTN with at least one year remaining prior to CCT.

Main Duties And Responsibilities:

• You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University’s achievements as a whole.
• All members of the academic department are expected to be research active. Infection is a major research theme of the Division of Clinical Medicine. Researchers are clinical and non-clinical academics from infectious diseases, microbiology and respiratory medicine and, with academics in inflammation biology, form the core of the Infection and Immunity theme of the prestigious NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).
• The infection academics form the Clinical Infection Research Group.
• There is ample opportunity for help with supervision during research but you will be expected to be involved with the process of raising funds for your research.
• You will be expected to contribute fully as teacher, researcher and leader, in fulfilment of the ideals of the ‘Sheffield Academic’.
• Contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the school.
• Undertake assessment of students and have personal mentoring responsibilities for a small group of students on the MBChB programme.
• Develop specific research interests to achieve the status of a national / international expert.
• Secure peer-reviewed competitive funding for research projects.
• Achieve an optimal standard of academic contribution by publishing research findings in high ranking scientific and specialty journals and routinely appraising the literature.
• Obtain funding to establish your own research team and begin the transition to independent investigator.
• Gain experience and expertise in giving academic seminars and lectures.
• Develop time-management skills and achieve a balance between clinical, research and teaching duties throughout the appointment and beyond.
• Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Clinical In-patient management of patients suffering from unselected community acquired infection, travel related infections and immunocompromised patients with and without HIV and AIDS. Outpatient management of HIV, chronic viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, pre-travel medicine and vaccination and service delivery for OPAT patients. Infectious diseases consult service (on both the RHH and NGH sites), and audit integrated with our Academic Career Pathways.
