Overview
This part of the description outlines a part‑time role within the School of Clinical Dentistry, requiring a commitment of a minimum of two sessions per week. The post involves education of dental students and postgraduate education activities, with an honorary clinical contract requested from the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Undertake clinical and didactic teaching to Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) undergraduates, Dental Care Professionals (DCP) and, where appropriate, postgraduate students as directed by the Head of Academic Unit of Restorative Dentistry.
- Engage in the development and delivery of teaching and contribute to the learning and teaching strategy of the school.
- Undertake clinical procedures in a competent and effective manner where appropriate for patient benefit, especially when the student lacks the necessary skills or experience.
- Provide practical learning and teaching in the restorative clinics, the clinical skills learning environments and, if appropriate, in the dental technology unit.
During a clinical session, you will have direct responsibility for:
- All aspects of safety associated with student activity and patients under your care.
- Ensuring excellent clinical outcomes for patients under your care (directly and treated by students).
- Maximising student learning and teaching derived from the clinical sessions.
- Undertake student assessment and support.
- Attend continuing education courses as appropriate.
- Attend staff development sessions organised by the relevant Academic Unit.
- Take part in annual appraisal through the University Staff Review and Development Scheme (SRDS).
- Provide an exemplary ethical standard as a role model for students at all levels.
- Take part in clinical governance activities in the directorate and participate in appraisal and postgraduate educational activities.
- Duties may involve patient assessment clinics, emergency clinics when students are on vacation, and care under the direction of consultants/honorary consultants for patients referred for secondary care.
- Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Person Specification
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).
- Appropriate post-qualifying experience.
- Substantial experience in a relevant Dental field.
- Evidence of high-quality, active, relevant, and sustained CPD.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work under own initiative or as part of a team.
- Commitment to continuing professional development.
- Understanding and application of evidence-based dentistry.
- Ability to establish professional relationships with patients and colleagues.
- Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities.
Desirable criteria (max 2)
- Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) or equivalent.
- On a specialist list of the General Dental Council.
- Awareness of University and NHS structures and environment.
