As a Project Engineer at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) you will apply your skills to solve real‑world manufacturing problems. Working within a multidisciplinary team at the Integrated Manufacturing Group (IMG), you will develop novel solutions for the high‑value manufacturing sector, including automated assembly design, flexible fixturing, robot end‑of‑arm tooling, and optimiser manufacturing processes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver project tasks related to automated and robotic design solutions, process improvement and verification of design solutions through simulation.
  • Conduct experimental work and synthesise outputs for project reporting.
  • Work to deadlines, managing your own time and resources.
  • Communicate your work to peers in written and verbal form.
  • Participate in stakeholder engagement sessions, both industrial and academic.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams to solve complex manufacturing problems.
  • Collaborate with peers to plan workload and resources to meet project timescales.
  • Research novel technology to advance knowledge and solve specific manufacturing problems.
  • Adhere to the AMRC quality management system and health and safety system.
  • Compile technical engineering reports and presentations.
  • Provide assistance to peers when required.
  • Attend conferences, trade shows and other events to develop your capabilities.
  • Assist with project delivery outside your core area of expertise when required.
  • Embed the University sustainability strategy into your working activities wherever possible.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Person Specification – Essential Criteria

  • Have a degree in a relevant subject or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Ability to work independently under the guidance of a senior colleague and manage own time effectively.
  • Ability to work within a project team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (report writing and presenting).
  • Ability to identify solutions to engineering challenges through research, as directed by senior colleagues.
  • Ability to write project outputs within your technical area.
  • Experience developing solutions to complex and technical problems related to mechanical design and engineering.
  • Experience working to industry standards such as Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T: BS 8888).
  • Experience in mechanical design for automation (robot end‑effector, robot cell).

Desirable Criteria

  • Industrial experience or placement in engineering.

  • Grade: 6
  • Salary: £32,080 to £36,636
  • Work arrangement: Full‑time
  • Duration: Two‑year Fixed Term Contract
  • Line manager: Senior Engineer
