Technician (Wildlife and Biological Sciences) in Salford

The role of Technician (Wildlife & Biological Sciences) is key to ensuring that students within SSEE can receive the best student experience possible in the degree programmes that encompass wildlife and biological sciences as well as supporting students from other degree programmes where required. The successful candidate will provide positive, proactive support and ability to ensure the safe, efficient, and high-quality operation of a range of scientific instrumentation and processes. The role will encompass support of wildlife & biological science equipment and related infrastructure, the provision of taught laboratory classes, and the support of project and field work activity. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining high standards of laboratory safety, sustainability, and operational excellence. As part of a collaborative team, the role holder will also be expected to be familiar with, and provide support across, other areas to ensure a seamless and efficient service.

Key Responsibilities

• Specialist advice: Maintain expert level knowledge in one or more identifiable specialisms. Provide advice in their specialist area(s). Recognise and identify the boundaries of their own specialist knowledge.
• Equipment maintenance: Liaise with technician management staff to prioritise equipment maintenance. Investigate causes of equipment issues and seek resolution following department procedure. Escalate unresolved issues. Document and close equipment maintenance incidents according to university procedures.
• Quality assurance (equipment & facilities): Contribute to the collection of evidence and the conduct of equipment and facility audits or review of activities, processes, or services. Examine records for evidence that appropriate testing and other quality control activities have taken place and complete compliance with organisational directives, standards and procedures. Identify non‑compliances, non‑conformances and abnormal occurrences.
• Safety and incident management: Assist in delivery of health and safety guidance. Assist in recording health and safety data and compliance. Carry out routine health and safety tasks across the directorate in liaison with external contractors. Undertake safety investigation on initial designs following provided methods. Follow procedures, identify, register and categorise incidents. Gather information to enable incident resolution and promptly allocate incidents as appropriate. Maintain records and advise relevant persons of actions taken.

The University’s School of Science, Engineering and Environment (SSEE) is a large multi-disciplinary School comprising around 400 staff, including around 50 highly skilled technicians and approximately 4500 students studying on a range of taught and research programmes at BSc, BEng, MEng, MSc, MPhil and PhD level. SSEE embraces subjects as diverse as Zoology, Parasitology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Biomedical Science, Architecture and Construction Management, in a range of locations on the Peel Park campus.
