Applications are invited for the role of Research Technician in the School of Medicine, University of Nottingham. You will be based in the Biodiscovery Institute (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/research-areas/biodiscovery-institute/biodiscovery-institute.aspx), with access to a range of state‑of‑the‑art facilities.

About the role

The project, funded by the UKRI Medical Research Council, will study the drivers of relapse in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) with the goal of improving treatment options in this poor‑outcome cancer. You will provide senior technical support using your knowledge, experience and skills to develop, perform and report laboratory experiments alongside general laboratory management. You will validate drivers of leukaemia relapse by generating a lentiviral library to screen in a reporter assay and work alongside a post‑doctoral research fellow to confirm therapeutically useful hits. You will be expected to work with primary human leukaemia samples (blood/bone marrow).

About the team

You will join the lab of Dr Sophie Kellaway as part of the Blood Cancer and Stem Cell group (https://bcasc.co.uk/). You will work closely with a research fellow on the same project. You will work with external collaborators at the project partners: clinical (University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust, Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust) and industrial (Rarity Bioscience, Uppsala).

About you

A minimum of a HNC in a relevant subject, equivalent qualifications (including BSc) or substantial work experience in a relevant role are essential, with the ability to plan and organise your work appropriately in discussion with your line manager. Experience in mammalian cell culture and knowledge of bacterial cloning will be required for this role. It is desirable for the successful candidate to have experience in any of the following areas: suspension cell culture, generating plasmids, production of lentiviral particles, luciferase reporter assays, handling primary human samples and the associated legal framework. The post holder will be comfortable working both independently and in a collaborative environment.
