Overview

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position within the condensed matter physics group in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester. The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of researchers, at the forefront of 2D materials research since the discovery of graphene in 2004, and will work on projects relating to graphene and other 2D materials funded by the EPSRC and other international funders.

Position Details

The two posts are available immediately for a period of 12 months (with an extension possibility of another year) and will focus on investigating the applications of molecular and ionic transport through capillaries made from 2D materials and heterostructures, aiming to advance technological development of 2D materials devices.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental research on molecular and ionic transport through capillaries formed from 2D materials and heterostructures.
  • Fabricate devices based on 2D materials and perform sensitive electrical and electrochemical measurements.
  • Engage in precision electrical measurements and utilize a range of fabrication and characterization facilities.
  • Collaborate with team members and contribute to the publication of results in internationally peer‑reviewed journals.

Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent) in experimental work within physics, condensed matter physics, chemistry, or materials science.
  • Experience and preference given to applicants with ionic conductance/molecular permeation measurements and fabrication of heterostructures from 2D materials.
  • Substantial knowledge and experience in fabricating devices based on 2D materials and performing sensitive electrical and electrochemical measurements.
  • Experience with precision electrical measurements is desirable; excellent technical ability across fabrication and characterisation facilities.
  • Well-organised, self-motivated with excellent communication skills and a strong publication record in internationally peer‑reviewed journals.
