The Network team
The Network team sits within the core area of CTS in IT Services, providing underpinning network services and support to our customers. The team works closely with all parts of IT Services and throughout the university to ensure our services meet and adapt to the changing needs of the university.
The role
The University of Manchester operates one of the largest single‑site campus networks in the UK and is currently undergoing a major refresh of all its LAN and Data Centre infrastructure. After working with a managed service partner, ITS has decided to bring services in‑house, giving the network infrastructure direct university control. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced network engineer to join the team as a subject‑matter expert.
Responsibilities include network design, delivery and operation across LAN/WAN/Wireless and Data Centre environments, developing the network policy and DDI environment, and ensuring designs and deployments are agreed with the network architect.
Specific role requirements
Candidates should have experience of design, delivery and operation of enterprise‑class networking and backend services, and the ability to think innovatively to identify opportunities and add value.
Required experience and skills:
- Network (LAN and wireless) design, operation and troubleshooting with Cisco or Aruba, preferably with professional certifications.
- Experience in a service support function, resolving customer issues and answering questions.
- Experience working with third‑party suppliers to define, design, deliver and operate solutions.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to communicate with technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Expertise in LAN and wireless networking, routing (BGP and OSPF), switching and data centre network technologies.
- Experience with HPE, Arista networking, F5 load balancers and network security tooling, firewalls, IPS, remote access solutions.
- Ability to work to tight timescales without sacrificing quality.
