We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as a Postdoctoral Research Associate within the Department of Materials at The University of Manchester. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting‑edge research focused on the development of innovative steels for safe hydrogen transmission and storage. You will be part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment working with leading academic and industrial partners to support the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high‑quality research on microstructural design and performance of hydrogen‑resistant steels.
  • Analyse, interpret and present research data, and contribute to publications and reports.
  • Collaborate with academic and industrial partners, including presenting at project meetings.
  • Support the supervision and training of postgraduate and undergraduate students.
  • Contribute to laboratory operations, research group activities, and project administration.

About You

We encourage applications from individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. You should demonstrate:

Essential Criteria

  • PhD (or near completion) in materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with advanced materials characterisation techniques (e.g. SEM, TEM, EBSD).
  • Knowledge of microstructural design and mechanical behaviour of engineering alloys.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and publish in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience studying hydrogen embrittlement or degradation mechanisms in metals.
  • Knowledge of advanced manufacturing or processing techniques (e.g. AM, HIP, SPS).
  • Experience working with ultra‑high strength steels.
  • Experience collaborating with industry partners or multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience supporting student supervision or training activities.
