Head of Scheduling at The University of Manchester
The University of Manchester employs Examination Invigilators on a casual basis. There are three main exam periods when exams take place and invigilators will be allocated several exam sessions within those periods:
- January (Semester 1 exams)
- August (Re-sit exams)
Specific dates can be found on the university website at: https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/key-dates/. All Invigilators will be required to attend training and follow clear guidance on how exams are organised and run.
Purpose of the role
Under the guidance of Scheduling Team and Senior Invigilators, the post holder is required to ensure the fair and proper conduct of examinations in accordance with university regulations, in an environment that enables a student to perform at their very best. Invigilators may also be required to invigilate students who have special support arrangements such as extra time or rest breaks.
- Following and enforcing the university’s exam procedures and regulations.
- Collecting examination papers from the Exams Office.
- Preparing examination rooms (e.g., laying out stationery and question papers).
- Directing students to their seats and reminding them about possessions permitted in examination venues.
- Making formal announcements to students at the start and end of the examination.
- Proactively patrolling the venue during examinations.
- Ensuring that exam conditions are maintained and being vigilant for students attempting to cheat.
- Dealing with problems/queries during the examination in accordance with guidelines set out by the University.
- Ensuring the relevant paperwork is completed fully, accurately and is returned to the examinations office.
- Collection of answer booklets at the end of the examination and ensuring all items are accounted for.
- Escorting students from the venue during the exam as required (e.g. for toilet breaks) and supervising them whilst outside the venue.
- Supervising students leaving at the end of the exam, ensuring they do not take anything without authorisation and that they leave in an orderly and quiet manner.
- Following the process for assuring all materials are accounted for and returned safely and securely to the Exams Office.
