We are looking to appoint a full-time Assistant Technician to support practical teaching within Audiology. The role will be based in the Manchester Centre for Audiology and Deafness (ManCAD), in the Ellen Wilkinson Building. The postholder will be responsible for setting up the wide range of audiological equipment and consumables required to deliver the laboratory-based teaching sessions. The postholder will be responsible for ensuring that the teaching rooms are always fit for purpose, including any housekeeping duties required to maintain the high standards for students training for clinical practice.

The postholder will be expected to have a good background in science and a willingness to learn new techniques. This is an opportunity for a motivated and organized individual with an interest in physics, hearing, and sound, with a relevant background to provide technical support. An understanding of the technical and scientific principles of Audiology would be an advantage but is not essential as training will be given.

Following a recent review of our Technical Services, all technical roles in support of Teaching are designed to be flexible and agile. As such, this role is advertised in support of Audiology Teaching, but you could be asked to move to support another Clinical Teaching area or work within the wider teaching technical structure on a short- or long-term basis.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the preparation and set-up of clinical, simulation and practical teaching spaces, equipment and materials for scheduled classes, outreach activity and events.
  • Preparing and checking scientific equipment, instruments, consumables and personal protective equipment for teaching sessions.
  • Acting as a point of contact for staff and students reporting technical issues, escalating matters appropriately so that problems are resolved quickly.
  • Supporting compliance with health and safety requirements, including risk assessments, COSHH, manual handling, PAT testing, safe working procedures and use of PPE.
  • Working flexibly across Faculty technical services, learning new techniques and supporting other areas where service need requires.

We welcome candidates who bring diverse perspectives, experiences, and approaches to their work.

About You

We encourage applications from individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. You should demonstrate:

  • Essential Criteria
  • Knowledge of laboratory or clinical teaching techniques and procedures, with an understanding of relevant workplace health and safety requirements including risk assessments, COSHH, manual handling, PPE and basic equipment safety.
  • Experience of working in a relevant technical, laboratory, clinical teaching or practical support environment, or demonstrable transferable experience gained through study or work.
  • Good practical, organisational and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures accurately.
  • A qualification in a science-related subject area, such as a degree, HND or HNC, or equivalent relevant technical experience.
  • Willingness to work flexibly across Faculty areas where service need requires and to undertake work outside regular office hours, including weekends, where necessary.
  • Desirable Criteria
  • Experience of preparing equipment, materials, teaching spaces or resources for practical activity, events or service delivery.

We value transferable skills and real-world experience as much as formal qualifications.

Our benefits include:

  • Generous employer pension contribution
  • Christmas closure across all departments outside of annual leave and bank holidays
  • Purple Place employee discount platform
