You’ll take a leading role in the development and use of learning analytics across the University, working with data from our digital learning platforms and wider University systems. You’ll work closely with academic teams, learning designers, student support, IT and senior colleagues, translating complex analysis into practical recommendations that people can understand and act on.
This is a full-time, permanent position and is home-based. As our Learning Analytics Specialist, you will:
- Analyse large and complex datasets to identify patterns in student engagement, progression and outcomes.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, reports and early alert mechanisms using learning and engagement data.
- Extract, transform and analyse data from multiple University systems, including Blackboard Ultra, student information systems, CRM and attendance systems.
- Develop and maintain automated data pipelines, reporting workflows and data integrations using APIs and data warehouses.
- Use statistical, predictive and/or machine learning techniques where appropriate.
- Lead or support the implementation and optimisation of learning analytics platforms, including Illuminate Enhanced and StREAM.
- Evaluate data and interventions to identify what is working and where improvements can be made.
- Turn complex analytical findings into clear, practical insights for academic and professional services colleagues.
- Provide expert advice on data quality, analytics and system configuration.
- Explore and test new approaches to learning analytics and engagement monitoring.
- Ensure the use of student data is responsible, transparent and compliant with GDPR and University requirements.
We’re looking for someone who is technically confident, highly analytical and able to see beyond the numbers. You’ll have:
- Demonstrable experience applying learning analytics or engagement data within higher education.
- Strong experience working with data analysis tools and languages such as SQL, Python, R, Power BI or Tableau, or equivalent.
- Experience working with APIs, data integration and data modelling.
- Strong data literacy, including statistical analysis and data visualisation.
- Working knowledge of Blackboard Ultra, including its data structures and analytics integrations.
- Working knowledge of data provision for StREAM by Kortext.
- The ability to communicate complex analytical findings clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on complex projects.
- A good understanding of digital learning, assessment and online engagement in higher education.
- A commitment to the ethical, inclusive and student-centred use of data.
Experience with predictive analytics or machine learning applied to student data would be desirable, as would familiarity with learning analytics standards such as xAPI or Caliper.
Closing date for application is midnight 6th November 2026.
Along with a starting salary of £54,000, you’ll enjoy:
- A generous annual leave entitlement of 30 days
- Private Medical Scheme and Life Assurance
- Contributory Pension Scheme
- Opportunity for professional development, including course sponsorship and fee discounts
- Season Ticket Loans and Student Discounts
