Position Summary: The Medical Assistant is responsible for ensuring efficient flow of patients through the health care setting by facilitating examination and treatment of patients in a culturally sensitive manner with exceptional customer service. They contribute to patient care by preparing patients for visits, performing limited procedures, scheduling diagnostic tests or consults, maintaining patient records, organizing clinic/exam rooms, maintaining supply and equipment inventory, and assisting physicians, nurses, and other team members.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:
- Accurately schedules tests; obtains films and reports; prepares laboratory specimens according to policy.
- Assists physicians and/or nurses with special procedures and examinations as defined on competency checklist.
- Collaborates with the healthcare team in coordinating patient care and may record patient history elements for review.
- Electronically submits, calls, or faxes prescriptions and refills to outpatient pharmacies.
- Ensures data collected from procedures are recorded properly in medical records.
- Maintains medical records and ensures documentation is complete; distributes reports and correspondence; manages files and photocopies.
- Maintains cleanliness and order in examination rooms; stocks supplies and checks equipment logs.
- Performs clerical duties including greeting patients, registration, scheduling, pre-certification, insurance processing, financial record keeping, and phone duties.
- Performs simple procedures as directed by healthcare staff and as per competency.
- Records vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures in medical records.
- Performs professional, clinical, and technical competencies as required by the department.
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Graduate
- One or more years of Medical Assistant experience OR Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program OR Medical Assistant Certification (CCMA or NRCMA)
Required Licensure and Certification:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days
