The Medical Assistant is responsible for ensuring efficient flow of patients through the health care setting by facilitating examination and treatment of patients in a culturally sensitive manner with exceptional customer service. The role contributes to patient care by:

  • Preparing patients for visits
  • Performing limited procedures
  • Scheduling diagnostic tests or consults
  • Maintaining patient records
  • Organising clinic/exam rooms
  • Maintaining supply/equipment inventory
  • Assisting physicians, other medical staff, nurses, interdisciplinary team members, and support staff

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Accurately scheduling tests; obtaining films and reports; preparing laboratory specimens according to policy
  • Assisting physicians and/or nurses with special procedures and examinations as defined on the competency checklist
  • Collaborating with members of the health care team in coordinating and implementing plans for patient care
  • Recording elements of the patient history for clinical staff review
  • Electronically submitting, calling, and/or faxing prescriptions and refills to outpatient pharmacies
  • Ensuring data collected for completed procedures is recorded on appropriate forms and in medical records
  • Maintaining medical records; ensuring all required documentation is available in the medical record; distributing reports and correspondence; filing, photocopying, and processing forms related to medical charts
  • Maintaining orderliness and cleanliness of examination rooms; stocking assigned areas and ensuring par levels of supplies are maintained; checking and completing required logs and equipment such as refrigerator logs, eyewash logs, emergency/crash carts, suction, and other required checks
  • Performing clerical duties such as greeting patients; registration; scheduling; pre-certification of tests, procedures, and medications; processing insurance forms; preparing financial records; answering phones; and entering ambulatory care charges
  • Performing simple procedures as directed by the nurse or physician and as defined on the competency checklist
  • Performing vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures and documenting in the medical record

Must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department. Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Graduate
  • 1 or more years of Medical Assistant experience OR Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program OR Medical Assistant Certification (CCMA or NRCMA)

Required Licensure and Certification:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days
