The University of Edinburgh has a strong history of innovation in mammalian transgenics and reproductive technologies. We are looking for an energetic and experienced manager for the core service which the University provides to researchers for the generation of transgenic and genetically modified model organisms. In this rapidly evolving field, we are looking to appoint a dynamic and innovative leader to drive technology development and design the most appropriate methodology to achieve the scientific objectives.

Successful applicants will have proven ability to produce research models in rodent species, and knowledge and a strong desire to develop and implement novel techniques for genome engineering. In Edinburgh there is an ongoing requirement for small and large changes to the mouse and rat genome, assisted reproduction techniques and cryopreservation. There are also opportunities to develop projects in non-murine species, such as aquatic and amphibian model organisms. The field of genome engineering is developing rapidly, and you will contribute to and support leading research into novel delivery methods and improvements in transgenic technology, interacting with academic research groups to identify areas of priority for innovation.

You will manage a small team of specialist practitioners, ensuring effective and efficient delivery of projects through day-to-day management of operations. You will also collaborate with researchers to develop and plan genome engineering projects when required, harnessing the newest and most efficient approaches. You will be responsible for managing a budget of c. £250k per year, to generate 30+ novel transgenic models along with rederivation and cryopreservation (an additional 100+ strains) per year. You will be responsible for compliance in all aspects under the UK legislative framework. Supply chain, health and safety and general administrative support is available within the department.

The successful candidate will have enthusiasm for innovative scientific research, a commitment to ethical scientific practices and be capable of motivating and inspiring a team. You will also be the principal contact with research partners using the service, and so a demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders in a multidisciplinary environment is essential.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and we are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Degree level (essential) or above (desirable) or equivalent qualification in molecular biology or related field
  • Hold, or have held, a UK Home Office Procedural Personal Licence
  • Relevant experience in producing transgenic animal models
  • Experience (essential) or management experience (desirable) of working in a transgenic core service team
  • A demonstrated ability to apply and/or develop cutting-edge genome engineering methods

As a valued member of our team you can expect:

  • A competitive salary.
  • An exciting, positive, creative, challenging and rewarding place to work.
  • To be part of a diverse and vibrant international community.
  • Comprehensive Staff Benefits, such as a generous holiday entitlement, competitive pension schemes, staff discounts, and family-friendly initiatives.

Bioresearch & Veterinary Services (BVS) are responsible for the housing, care and management of animals used in biomedical research at the university. Around 120 BVS staff provide Home Office, veterinary, and technical support for our researchers to ensure optimal animal welfare, high quality research, and compliance with all relevant legislation across multiple sites.
