Background
Birmingham Medical School invites applications for fourteen part-time Senior Clinical Tutors (0.2 FTE) to support delivery of the new Introductory Clinical Course (ICC) within the MBChB programme. The ICC introduces Year 1 medical students to core consultation and clinical skills, providing a foundation for learning throughout the five-year course. Teaching is primarily campus-based at the University of Birmingham, complemented by GP placements on alternate Thursdays to support application of learning in clinical settings. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to innovative undergraduate medical education, support early clinical learning, and inspire future doctors. It may particularly suit sessional or portfolio GPs with an interest in teaching.
This is a clinical academic post. Applicants must be practising NHS General Practitioners (MBChB/MBBS and MRCGP), fully registered with the GMC, hold a licence to practise, and participate in appraisal and revalidation. Post holders must be available every Thursday (08:30–17:30) during University teaching terms in the 2026–2027 academic year to deliver on-campus teaching. Work patterns may be subject to future change.
Role Summary
The primary responsibility is facilitating small-group ICC teaching sessions on campus. Teaching focuses largely on consultation skills, including work with simulated patients and delivery of high-quality, constructive feedback. There may also be opportunities to teach clinical reasoning, examination, and practical clinical skills. All teaching materials and training are provided. Post holders will work under the supervision of the ICC senior academic team and must comply with University policies, including assessment, safeguarding, and equality, diversity and inclusion. The role supports professional development in simulation-based teaching and undergraduate assessment.
Main Duties
- Contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues including the development of on-line and face to face learning materials.
- Teach courses across the undergraduate medical curriculum, predominantly through lectures and small group teaching, so that the programme’s teaching objectives are met.
- Play an important role in student academic support and mentoring.
- Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
- Undertake, under guidance initially, examining in CPSA examinations, invigilating AKT examinations, marking written submissions and taking part in simulated CPSA preparation sessions (which will include providing students with immediate verbal feedback).
- Contribute, under supervision, to assessments including writing examination questions, organising pilots of new questions, taking part in standard setting.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of faculty development training sessions for clinical and non-clinical staff contributing to the MB ChB programme.
Management/Administration
- Undertake administration arising from teaching.
- Undertake personal professional development in medical education, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes and scholarship activities.
- Engage in continuing professional development which aligns with the needs of the programme and maintains medical knowledge.
Citizenship
- Contribute to public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader.

Person Specification
- Essential Primary Medical Qualification (MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent) and MRCGP
- Evidence of working as a General Practitioner in the NHS
- Evidence of registration on the GMC GP Register with a licence to practice
- Evidence of participation in clinical appraisal and revalidation
- Proven ability to teach in an undergraduate medicine context
- A knowledge of the GMC Outcomes for Doctors and the principles of the Medical Licensing Assessment
- Good organisational skills including the capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance important and urgent demands, as well as follow instructions
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to establish good relations with colleagues
- Ability to use IT for teaching
- Willingness to learn and contribute to broader management/administration processes
- Willingness to undertake professional development, relevant to the educational and medical components of the programme.
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area, that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
